The multi-state manhunt for a Minnesota man and a teenage Nebraska girl he allegedly abducted was focused on northwest Montana after a stolen car thought to be driven by the fugitive was spotted, authorities said. The FBI is working with law enforcement in several states to track Anthony Steven Zappa, 29, who is suspected of abducting Anne Sluti, 17, from the parking lot of a Kearney, Neb., shopping center Friday.

Two ranchers in Bassett, Neb., who used a shotgun to prevent federal agents from seizing their cattle, walked into a sheriff's office to complain about the nighttime roundup and were jailed. The ranchers, brothers Stanley and Eldon Slangal, were in custody on charges of kidnaping and several other violations after they stopped six Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. employees and the county sheriff from taking 150 cattle as collateral for a debt.

A man who kidnapped and dismembered his ex-girlfriend's 3-year-old son has been sentenced to death. The three-judge panel ruled Thursday that exceptional depravity warranted the death penalty for Raymond Mata Jr. Mata, 26, of Scottsbluff, was convicted in January of first-degree murder, felony murder and kidnapping for the March 1999 killing of Adam Gomez. Body parts were found in the basement of Mata's sister's home and in a freezer and a dog bowl at Mata's home.
