A businessman was rescued Tuesday and his alleged kidnappers arrested when police rammed a getaway van after the men collected a $500,000 ransom, gave their victim $20 for cab fare and released him. Marshall Wais, 80, the chairman of Richmond-based Marwais Steel Co., was not injured in the daylong drama. "I feel fine," Wais said less than an hour after the rescue. "They wanted a million dollars. I didn't have quite that much on me." Wais was kidnapped at 7 a.m.

A 9-year-old boy arriving home late at night with his mother was abducted by three gun-wielding men and later killed. The kidnaping and murder did not fit usual patterns of home invasion and street robberies, and the case is considered "very high-profile," police homicide inspector Jim Bergstrom said. Michael Nguyen, 9, was taken from in front of his house in a quiet Sunset District neighborhood. His body was found by a woman walking her dog in Golden Gate Park, about a mile from the boy's home.

A man tried to kidnap Abiah Folger, an heiress to the Folger Coffee Co. fortune, as the 12-year-old stepped from a school bus near her San Francisco home, authorities said. San Francisco police officer Greg Ovanessian said as the girl began to cross the street she noticed a black-haired, pot-bellied man she described as "scary." Seconds later the man rushed forward and tried to grab her. The kidnaper was frightened away when the child began screaming, Ovanessian said.
