Kings County has launched the nation's first van-pool program for farm workers. Officials showed off new white vans Wednesday that farm workers can lease to drive co-workers to the fields or packinghouses. The vans meet new safety regulations required for vehicles that transport farm workers.

Two adults and five children died late Saturday when an SUV in which they were riding ran a stop sign near Kettleman City, Calif., struck an embankment and landed on its roof in a canal, according to the California Highway Patrol. The 1992 Ford Explorer, which was carrying nine people, two of whom survived, overturned in a dirt-lined bed filled with 5 feet of water, the CHP said.

A Kings County judge with three reprimands was removed from office by the state Supreme Court on Thursday for her courtroom dealings with friends and creditors. Kings County Municipal Judge Glenda Doan failed to disclose her connections with people who appeared in her courtroom, assured one friend she would "take care" of several criminal cases, and told two friends to stonewall state investigators, the court said.
