This story has been corrected. See below for details. Two Los Angeles television stations want to test whether it is indeed better to share. Non-commercial KLCS-TV and commercial station KJLA-TV have asked the Federal Communications Commission for permission to take part in an experiment to determine if the two stations can share the same airwaves without reducing the quality of their signals for viewers. The channel-sharing test, if successful, could encourage other broadcasters to do the same.

Five high school jazz orchestras from the Los Angeles Unified School District will be featured in a half-hour television show Thursday at 8 p.m. on KLCS Channel 58. "Top Five Jazz Bands 1988," emceed by actress Marla Gibbs, was produced by Ralph Jungheim under the auspices of Performing Tree, an arts education organization.

A City Section football preview show will air Sept. 3 at 5:30 p.m. on KLCS, Channel 58, the Los Angeles Board of Education's television station. All 49 high school teams in the district will be evaluated by a panel of sportswriters and experts.

KLCS Channel 58, the TV station owned by the Los Angeles Unified School District, altered its broadcast schedule in response to the teachers strike Monday to include more instructional programs that do not require an adult educator's presence. The strike also shut down two 52-part educational series that KLCS is producing--"Driver Education" and "Educational and Career Planning"--because six certificated staff members were called into classrooms to fill in for striking teachers, said Sabrina Fair Thomas, manager of program scheduling.

A City Section baseball preview show will air Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. on KLCS, Channel 58, the Los Angeles Board of Education's television station. Additional airings are scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and March 20 at 8:30 p.m.

City Section Track and Field Championships, today at Van Nuys Birmingham--Dorsey High's boys' team is pursuing its third consecutive championship and eighth overall title and Woodland Hills Taft is favored to win its first girls' championship. Field events begin at 4 p.m., running events at 6. KLCS, Channel 58 in most areas, will televise the meet from 6-9:30.

City Section athletes playing for championships next weekend will receive plenty of exposure on KLCS Channel 58, the Los Angeles Board of Education's television station. The girls' and boys' City 4-A basketball finals Friday will be televised live from the Sports Arena, with the girls' game at 6 p.m. and the boys' at 8 p.m. The girls' and boys' City 4-A soccer finals next Saturday at East Los Angeles College will be televised live for the first time, the girls' starting at 4 p.m.
