"Undercovers," a glossy drama about married caterers moonlighting as spies, was positioned by NBC as more than just a glittery entry in its fall lineup when it premiered last September. The series featured two black leads — a rarity in prime-time network TV — and was the centerpiece of the network's aggressive campaign touting its commitment to boosting diversity. NBC trumpeted "Undercovers" as a response to opponents of the network's merger with cable giant Comcast who contended NBC had a historically poor record when it came to placing African Americans in front of and behind the camera.

KNBC-TV has a new 24-hour news and feature station called California Nonstop. If you haven't noticed, that might be because you live in the roughly half of Los Angeles-area homes (many with satellite TV) that don't get the channel. Or you might not have found the station because the NBC affiliate isn't happy enough with its new product to begin promoting it just yet. Station management describes California Nonstop, which includes a live hour of news at 7 p.m., as a "tremendous opportunity" to expand coverage of L.A. and Southern California, though it concedes that many of the programs are in the work-in-progress stage.

Among the many promises made in its just-approved takeover of NBC Universal, Comcast Corp. pledged to sustain and even add hundreds of hours to the news and public affairs programming at the 10 TV stations NBC owns around the country. As a baby step in the right direction, NBC should start by putting in the garbage-disposal all those no-calorie "news" segments about, for example, "The Biggest Loser," "Law & Order," "America's Got Talent" and movies from Universal Pictures. Convert those time slots, instead, to some meat and potatoes coverage about what's happening in our neighborhoods, our schools, our city halls.

You'd never know it from the serene and smiling faces plastered on the on-air talent, but a psychodrama has been playing out for many months at KNBC News. It has pitted traditional television journalists and story tellers at Channel 4 against a nouveau crowd of content creators who prefer their sizzle served up hot, preferably without much steak. Steve Lange presided as a veritable Top Chef over the new menu. As KNBC's "vice president, content," Lange dished up news programs chock-full of celebrities, hot-looking young people and entertainment tie-ins, all the better if the segments promoted other NBC Universal properties.
