Female soccer players are prone to anterior cruciate ligament injuries of the knee, but a study has found that a specific 15-minute warm-up significantly reduced the risk of ACL injuries. The study, presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in San Francisco, focused on a group of 4,564 female Swedish players ages 12 to 17. Of those players, 2,479 were randomly assigned to do a 15-minute warm-up and 2,085 were part of a control group.

An inventor from Hungary, on vacation in California, telephoned the Rams last year, saying he had devised a foolproof knee brace that would prevent serious knee injuries. Come right over, the traveler was told. The Rams have been looking for that very item now for going on 50 years. The latest injury to Andrew Bynum probably has more to do with bad karma than inherently bad knees, medical experts said Tuesday. The Lakers' 21-year-old star suffered his second major knee injury in two seasons Saturday when Kobe Bryant collided with him in the first quarter of the game against the Memphis Grizzlies. Bynum's two injuries are unrelated, however, and don't foreshadow a career punctuated by knee problems, sports medicine doctors say.

"It felt like the plane was falling to pieces," said passenger Grace Biesecker.

The Los Angeles Lazers will attempt to salvage what's left of their three-game trip with what's left of their team when they play the Dallas Sidekicks tonight at 5:30 at the Reunion Arena in Dallas. Not only have the Lazers (3-3) lost their last three Major Indoor Soccer League games, they also have become so riddled by injuries that a victory over the Sidekicks (4-3) would amount to a major accomplishment.

Reporting from Dallas -- Ramon Sessions has 12 points and seven assists as the Lakers lead Dallas at halftime, 57-44, Wednesday at American Airlines Center. Sessions didn't start the game but appeared to be only a matter of time -- or maybe one game -- before he overtook Steve Blake. Kobe Bryant has 15 points and Pau Gasol has 12 points for the Lakers (28-18), who are trying to forget their late collapse Tuesday in Houston. They're also trying to improve an ugly 9-15 road record.
