RE "In a Watery Landscape, Flowers That Swim" [Jan. 4]: Part of this story represented what I've heard referred to as "koi snobs": unnecessary glorification of the presentation of fish. After seeing beautiful and huge koi swimming wild in lakes and rivers in Japan, I just don't take koi snobs seriously. Please, it's a hobby! And like any hobby, one may spend a modest or an incredible amount of money to satisfy one's wants, but I think this article went far overboard on the top end. Our koi began in a galvanized stock tank, 7 feet wide and nearly 3 feet deep, with a simple biological and mechanical filtration system to keep the water chemistry balanced.

The limestone-clad house incorporates reclaimed ceiling beams, salvaged tile, antique doors and marble fireplace surrounds.

To hear Chris Bushman tell it, the colorful carp called koi may not seem likely candidates for household pets, but their tendency to live long lives does have its reward. "If you get a pet koi when you are a kid, it'll last you all your life," the 38-year-old film laboratory manager said. "It's not like a cat or a dog." Bushman should know. The North Hollywood resident, a koi collector for eight years, served last weekend as chairman of the U. S.

Carol Vena-Mondt uses old junk store black-and-white family-photo Christmas cards as springboards for large painted family portraits. Using only the bluish grays and whites of faded photos or those first '50s TV screens that aired "The Ed Sullivan Show," she duplicates postwar families oozing with the prosperity and down-home propriety that briefly marked life before Sen. McCarthy and Korea. "The Hennings" are here, for example, with their goofy, spectacled mom and pop and a brood of progeny that only a parent could love.

Words don't mean a lot to Chino Moreno. For the singer and lyricist from the ethereal metal band Deftones, songs are all about melody and the venting of pure emotion, not poetry. “I really don't think too much about writing lyrics. I'm not like a poet,” says Moreno, calling from a Deftones tour stop in Argentina. “It's all pretty much how I feel about the sound of the music. Melody always comes first, and the words will just come. It's sort of a puzzle to put together.” Even his fellow band members aren't sure what he's singing about, although the emotional stakes seem clear.

Window-shopping is an imaginative and immersive experience at Koi boutique in South Pasadena. Mannequins dressed in fantastical costumes made of ordinary objects like tea bags, Slinkys and surgical gloves pop up every August and January to dazzle the eyes of passersby and draw attention to the shop's twice-a-year sales. The items Koi sells inside are just as distinctive. "People plan their vacations around our sales," in-house jewelry designer Brenda Henriques maintains. For the last eight years, Koi has been transforming its 1926 building with colorful presentations -- tassels become slippers, planters become sleeves, plastic forks become feathers in a dress and hanging fish swim through an air-conditioned current.

Whoopi Goldberg and composer Herbie Hancock pair up to spin a sprightly African folk tale about the clever son of a chief looking for respect in "Koi and the Kola Nuts," an audio release from Rabbit Ears' "We All Have Tales" series. Hancock composed the eccentric, percussive score; his keyboard wizardry is complemented by African percussionist Bill Summers. Side 2 of the recording is instrumental with strong adult appeal.
