This ought to give Aaron Rodgers better memories of the NFL draft. The Green Bay Packers signed their franchise quarterback Friday to a five-year contract extension through the 2019 season, eight years after they stopped his slide down the draft board and took him with the 24th pick in the first round. The deal, according to a person with knowledge of the contract who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not released the details, is worth as much as $110 million, with $40 million guaranteed.

A Boeing 757 cargo plane bound for Ontario, Calif., made an emergency landing at Portland International Airport following takeoff today after a bird knocked out an engine, Port of Portland officials said. The United Parcel Service plane landed safely shortly after takeoff and there were no injuries, Port of Portland spokeswoman Sara Roberts said.

Olympic light-heavyweight bronze medalist Evander Holyfield stormed to his seventh consecutive professional victory by stopping Jeff Meachum in the fifth round of a scheduled eighth-round cruiserweight fight here Wednesday night. Referee Larry Hazzard stopped the fight when a Holyfield left hook to the head sent Meachum to the canvas for the third time in the fight. Holyfield (7-0) floored Meachum with an overhand right in the third and again with a left hook to the head in the fourth.

Russell Mitchell won the North American Boxing Federation welterweight championship Monday by knocking out former champion Derrick Kelly of Riverside in the seventh round of their scheduled 12-round bout at the Forum. Mitchell, of Quail Valley, Calif., was rated No. 10 by the NABF. He was outpointed in the first five rounds as Kelly took command. Mitchell responded with a short right cross that struck Kelly on the temple and at 2:52 of the seventh round, referee Chuck Hassett counted Kelly out. Kelly is 24-2-2 with nine knockouts and Mitchell is 16-10-3, also with nine knockouts.

Pernell Whitaker knocked out Jake Rodriguez and Felix Trinidad knocked out Larry Barnes on Saturday night, then the two talked about fighting each other in a battle of welterweight champions. "I am very interested in fighting Whitaker, and he is very interested in fighting me," Trinidad said after he stopped Barnes in the fourth round in defense of the International Boxing Federation 147-pound title at the Convention Center.
