Kristen Kane overtook three-time U.S. champion Krista Klein on one of her final dives to win the women's one-meter title in the Phillips 66 National Diving Championships at The Woodlands, Tex. U.S. Olympic gold medalist Mark Lenzi was the top qualifier in the men's three-meter springboard semifinals, the event he won in Barcelona. The men's and women's three-meter finals will be held today.

Brian Earley of Northridge earned a berth in the men's three-meter springboard finals and Janae Lautenschlager of Northridge advanced in the women's three-meter springboard competition in the U.S. diving championships in Bartlesville, Okla., on Friday. Earley, who Thursday qualified for Sunday's men's platform final, totaled 477.27 points to place eighth and become the only men's qualifier from the Valley area. Top qualifying honors went to Mark Lenzi of Fredericksburg, Va., who totaled 590.

Wendy Lucero, who took two months off to prepare for her wedding, won her ninth U.S. diving championship by winning the 1-meter springboard competition Thursday night. Lucero, who has more national titles than any other active diver, goes for her 10th in the 3-meter springboard starting today. She scored 458.16 points, beating Janae Lautenschlager by nearly 14 points. Krista Klein won the bronze medal, finishing nearly 16 points behind Lucero.

Krista Klein won her third national championship and Patrick Jeffrey earned his first in the three-meter springboard Saturday at the U.S. Diving Championships. Klein beat defending champion Wendy Lucero by 37 points to win her first U.S. title in the three-meter event since the indoor championships in April of 1990. Jeffrey, a perennial finalist but never a national champion, also had a strong finish and got some help when two veteran champions performed poorly down the stretch.

Krista Klein, a 1986 Mission Viejo High graduate, is in fourth place after the preliminaries of the three-meter springboard in the U.S. Olympic diving trials Wednesday night at Indianapolis. Klein scored 473.79 points for her 10-dive program, putting her 14.4 points behind Karen LaFace, who is in second, in the race for the final Olympic berth. Julie Ovenhouse, the reigning national springboard champion, leads the competition with 542.88.

BASEBALL * Jacob Turner and Jacob Meskin, Palos Verdes: Turner threw a six-hitter, striking out two and walking one, and Meskin hit two doubles and drove in a run, and the Sea Kings recorded a 3-2 victory over Los Angeles Loyola, ranked No. 20 by The Times, in a pool-play game of the Redondo tournament.
