To pinpoint needs of elderly residents for the next two decades, the City Council has allocated $37,000 for an extensive study of the city's senior citizens. At the same time, those who provide housing, health care and social services for the elderly will be interviewed. The study will be conducted by a team of faculty and graduate students from Cal State Fullerton.

 Hamilton won the Dennis Gilbert Classic on Saturday at the Urban Youth Academy, defeating Verdugo Hills, 5-4, in nine innings in the championship game. Hector Velazquez had two hits, including the game-winning RBI in the ninth. Ethan Lazar contributed three hits. All-City catcher Dalton Blumenfeld showed he also has a good arm, throwing 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Benji Kaiserman and Dakota Kravetz added two hits apiece. Augie Lozano led Verdugo Hills with two hits and two RBIs.

Gary Gerber, owner of a Los Angeles gasoline and oil distribution firm, has been appointed to the La Mirada Planning Commission by Councilman Bob Chotiner. Gerber, 47, takes the commission seat held by Chotiner, who was elected to the City Council last month. A former treasurer of Friends of the La Mirada Civic Theatre, Gerber also was Chotiner's campaign treasurer.

A Fullerton junior high school math teacher was charged Tuesday with sexually assaulting and sending sexual text messages to three students. Melissa Lindgren, 28, who taught at Nicholas Junior High School, faces multiple felony counts on charges of assaulting three boys between the ages of 13 and 15 she met at the school, the Orange County district attorney's office said in a statement. The La Mirada resident is accused of sexually touching and kissing one boy while in a classroom, a second boy on the school campus and a third student in her car. Prosecutors said the crimes occured over a two-year period, ending this year.
So much for the four Division I college prospects. So much for the undefeated season. So much for No. 1. La Mirada, the top-seeded team in the Southern Section Division VI playoffs, discovered Saturday that defending champions don't go down easily. Or at all. Fourth-seeded Newport Harbor hit the Matadores like steelworkers in a 35-16 semifinal victory in front of an overflow home crowd of 5,300.

A shallow magnitude 2.5 earthquake was reported Thursday morning one mile from East La Mirada, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 3:59 a.m. PDT near the surface. According to the USGS, the epicenter was one mile from La Habra, two miles from La Mirada, and three miles from Fullerton. In the past 10 days, there have been 10 earthquakes magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby. This information comes from the USGS Earthquake Notification Service, and this post was created by an algorithm written by the author.

The temblor occurred at 11:30 a.m. Pacific time at a depth of 0.6 miles. [Updated 11:49 p.m. PDT April 1: According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was felt over a wide area, including much of Northern Orange County, the San Gabriel Valley and Eastside of L.A. There were no reports of damage. ] There have been hundreds of aftershocks from Friday's 5.1 La Habra quake, largest being a 4.1 magnitude temblor that hit Rowland Heights Saturday afternoon.
