DENVER -- On his first day with the Dodgers, Michael Young said his childhood idol was his new manager, Don Mattingly. Mattingly smiled Monday when he was told what Young said. “It's not going to get him in the lineup any faster,” Mattingly said. “Just kidding.” Mattingly laughed. “We'll see what he says when the season's over,” Mattingly said. Acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night, Young joined the Dodgers for the opening game of a three-game series at Coors Field.

As a child, the boy would pretend to be his favorite soccer pro, sliding across the ground and narrating into an imaginary microphone, "Oh, what a save by Oswaldo Sanchez!" But his mother thought the game was too rough. So he could only play pickup. When he entered La Puente High, his mother decided to let him play. What authorities have said happened next was staggering, and led to the arrest of four students in September. According to Los Angeles County sheriff's officials, older soccer players sodomized younger ones — and attempted to sodomize the youth, who requested anonymity.

The Jackrabbits emphatically answered that question with a 40-25 victory over La Puente Bishop Amat on Friday night in a first-round Pac-5 Division playoff game at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Long Beach. "We haven't redeemed ourselves just yet, but we played good enough to move on," said Lara, whose team has reeled off seven consecutive wins since losing its last three nonleague games.

La Puente Bishop Amat (5-0-1, 0-0) at Mission Hills Alemany (6-1, 1-0), 7 p.m. - Alemany hasn't lost a Serra League game since it joined the league in 2010, going 9-0. This should be one of the Warriors' toughest tests. Bishop Amat has balance on offense with quarterback Koa Haynes and running back Dionza Blue. Darren Andrews is a terrific receiver-defensive back. Alemany gave up 42 points last week in a win over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. The offense scored 49 points and might need to equal that, putting the pressure on quarterback Devon Dunn and receivers Steven Mitchell and Devin Ross.
