A La Puente pastor detained by Iranian authorities after protesting outside a Tehran prison is now at a Swiss embassy and is expected to fly home soon, according to his group's website. Pastor Eddie Romero was detained Monday morning in Tehran as he protested outside Evin Prison, his daughter told reporters at a news conference. Sarah Yetter said her father went to Iran to protest the "unlawful detention" of five people she identified as Christians and human rights activists. When asked about Romero at a daily press briefing Tuesday in Washington, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said U.S. officials were "aware of the reports that a U.S. citizen has been detained in Iran" but "due to privacy considerations, have no further comment or detail at this time.

There's nothing Koa Farmer cannot do on the football field -- and that includes playing quarterback. The senior all-purpose back from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame took over for injured starter Grant Kraemer in the third quarter and engineered three scoring drives that helped the Knights beat La Puente Bishop Amat, 31-21, in a Serra League opener Friday night at Notre Dame. Farmer was honored before the game for his selection to the Blue-Grey High School All-American Bowl, to be played Jan. 11 in Tampa, Fla. The defensive backs coach for the South team is former Alabama and NFL star Mark McMillian, who was on the sidelines Friday.

Hacienda La Puente school board member Joseph Chang was censured by his colleagues last week over allegations that he accepted trips to China from a private company and pressured school administrators to accept unqualified international students. The board voted 3 to 1 on Thursday, with board members Jay Chen, Anthony Duarte and Rudy Chavarria supporting the censure, Chang opposing it and Gino Kwok abstaining. The censure expresses the board's opinion but does not have any effect on Chang's status as a board member, said Trevin Sims, an attorney for the board.

There are many reasons to visit Colonia Taco Lounge out in La Puente. There is a nice selection of beers on tap for the eastern part of the county, including Cucapa from Mexicali and the elusive 90 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head. The chile-zapped micheladas are good, and the capirinhas are made as carefully as the margaritas. The owner is Eastside taco master Ricardo Diaz, whom you may know from Cooks Tortas, Guisados or his Whittier restaurant Bizarra Capital. As you might expect, the tacos of braised lamb barbacoa ; stewed pork belly with jalapeno oil; seared queso fresco with bacon; spicy scrambled eggs with herbs; and carnitas with pumpkin are considerable.

Even 12 years later, the events of Sept. 11, 2001, sear Americans' memories. In comments posted on latimes.com , people remember the tragic events of the day -- the moments, both good and bad, heroic and fearful, that are summed up by the numerals 9/11. It was early morning when the first airplane hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. On the East Coast, commuters were rushing to their jobs, schools were filling with educators and students. It seemed an ordinary day until 8:46 a.m., when it wasn't.

DENVER -- On his first day with the Dodgers, Michael Young said his childhood idol was his new manager, Don Mattingly. Mattingly smiled Monday when he was told what Young said. “It's not going to get him in the lineup any faster,” Mattingly said. “Just kidding.” Mattingly laughed. “We'll see what he says when the season's over,” Mattingly said. Acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night, Young joined the Dodgers for the opening game of a three-game series at Coors Field.

A man was killed by a sheriff's deputy in La Puente on Saturday night after he appeared to reach for a gun in his waistband while fleeing on foot from a routine traffic stop. At about 9:30 p.m. the deputy pulled over a vehicle after it failed to stop at the intersection of Loukelton Street and North Ballista Avenue , said Sgt. Rich Pena of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. A passenger got out of the car and ran, twice appearing to reach to his waist for a handgun, Pena said.
