605 All-Star Football Game--Bill Friedrich of St. John Bosco High School has been selected to coach the west team and Mike Wunderley of Valley Christian High has been chosen to coach the east team. The game will be played at 8 p.m. July 17 at La Mirada District Stadium. Friedrich will be assisted by his staff at the Bellflower school, which includes Tim Ellis, offensive coordinator; John Totten, defensive coordinator; Steve Scully, special teams and defensive backs; and Joe Chavez, receivers.

Swinging a baseball bat was second nature for Jeff Ferguson, so much so that when he could no longer do it, tears welled in his eyes. After injuring his back and pelvis in a car accident 1 1/2 years ago, Ferguson was told by doctors and coaches that his chances of playing baseball again for La Serna High in Whittier were slim at best. They looked slim a year ago. Ferguson's memories of trying to make the team last season are not pleasant.

Winners of College Hospital's 4th annual Safe and Sober Awards were announced recently at a luncheon hosted by Will Gotay of the movie "Stand and Deliver," Marisa Ryan of the TV show "Major Dad" and Darius McCrary of the TV series "Family Matters." Assemblyman Bob Epple made presentations to the winning schools.

Tiny Avalon Junior and Senior High School, which serves mostly low-income students on Santa Catalina Island, has received one of the state's top educational awards. The school, which has an enrollment of 175, was named a distinguished school by the state Department of Education for its academic improvement.

Two teen-agers about to graduate from Whittier high schools were killed on the way home from school Tuesday, when a car driven by another student smashed head-on into theirs, Whittier police said. Chad Kerneen and Evan James, both 17, died instantly when a car driven by Gilbert Moreno, 17, also of Whittier, allegedly drifted over to the wrong side of Mills Avenue and hit Chad's car at high speed, Police Lt. Steve Milakovich said. Moreno was hospitalized in serious condition.

Former Whitney High School boys basketball Coach Bruce Carlisle has been named coach at La Serna High School in Whittier. Carlisle, 33, was twice selected by The Times as its All-Southeast Coach of the Year. He led Whitney of Cerritos to back-to-back CIF Southern Section Small Schools Division titles. He replaces John Fien, who was fired from La Serna in March. Carlisle was offered the La Serna post two weeks ago, but asked for time to make the decision.

What a difference four weeks makes in a football season. A month ago, La Serna High School was 0-3 and facing a difficult seven-game league schedule. But Friday night at 7:30, the resurgent Lancers (now 4-3) can claim first place in the Whitmont League with a victory at El Rancho. Perhaps easier said than done, though. In addition to the home-field advantage, El Rancho is also 4-0 in league play (6-1 overall) and has a five-game winning streak.

Aaron Sohegian had 14 kills, five blocks and six digs as Whittier Christian defeated Bosco Tech in three games in a Southern Section Division 2-A volleyball semifinal at La Serna High School Wednesday. Whittier Christian won, 15-12, 15-13, 15-12, and will play Calvary Chapel in the final Saturday. Brandon Blevins had 10 kills and seven solo blocks, and Adam Keife had 11 kills, six blocks and 12 digs for Whittier Christian.

Perennial powerhouse Wilson High School of Hacienda Heights pulled out a narrow victory in the Super Quiz of the ninth Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon held Saturday at Gahr High School in Cerritos. Wilson's last contestant was senior Michelle Ivey, whose father teaches math at La Serna High School in Whittier. Ivey answered all five of her questions correctly on the topic of astronauts and space travel to ice her team's narrow win over West High School of Torrance.
