If you worked on a house for five years, you'd call it a labor of love, right? What if that process took 25 years? Is there a name for that? This is the story behind architect Paul Zajfen's epic quest in Laguna Beach. If Nathan Lancaster of Laguna Beach feels a little sore at school on Friday morning, he'll have a good excuse. On Thursday night, the 6-foot, 185-pound senior set an Orange County rushing record with a reported 552 yards in 31 carries and scored seven touchdowns in an Orange Coast League game against Santa Ana Calvary Chapel. The old record was 527 yards. Laguna Beach ended up losing to Calvary Chapel, 62-56, in overtime on a Danny Mattero touchdown pass to Luke Buran. Mattero passed for 505 yards and five touchdowns.

Jen Kessy, a 36-year-old from San Juan Capistrano, was one of the happiest athletes in the world a year ago. She was an Olympic beach volleyball silver medalist with partner April Ross and no one was happier than her sports-crazy father Ron Kessy. This year Ron, only 57, died in his sleep of a heart attack, shortly after Kessy had returned from a tournament in China. "It's just been one of the worst years of my life," Kessy said Friday after she and partner Rachel Scott, seeded fifth at the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour event in Huntington Beach, were upset in the first round by Sarah Day and Kaitlin Nielsen, 21-17, 21-23, 15-13.
