A new welfare office to serve poor and elderly residents in South County will open April 1 near La Paz Road and McIntyre Street. Financing the office became a priority in September after an attempt by county officials to close down the small welfare office in San Juan Capistrano caused a public outcry. Those opposing the closure said it would force the poor to make the long trip to the county welfare office in Costa Mesa. The San Juan Capistrano office was closed for less than a week.

A water main break behind a home in Laguna Hills undermined a hillside and caused sinkholes to form, forcing the evacuations of the house and five apartment buildings down the hill. The water main break behind the home at 2 Clover Hill Lane occurred about 1:10 p.m. Saturday, officials said. Down the hillside from that break are five four-plexes in the 25700 block of Via Lomas. About 60 people were displaced, and the Orange County Fire Authority is awaiting a soil engineer to study the hillside, said fire division Chief Kris Concepcion.

Even before he strode off the field at StubHub Center after his team's 41-9 rout of Redding Enterprise in Saturday's CIF state Division II championship bowl game, West Hills Chaminade quarterback Brad Kaaya realized he'll soon begin a new chapter in his career. However, that didn't prevent him from taking a few moments to savor the victory - his last in an Eagles' uniform. "I'm so proud of this team because we gave it everything we had," Kaaya said after throwing for 276 yards and two touchdowns.
