Re "The Dissension Flows Freely in Lake Arrowhead," May 19: The idea of more development around Lake Arrowhead is deplorable. As someone who travels to Arrowhead every year, it hurts me to think about the horrible ecological impact that construction would create. Arrowhead is already facing an increase in domestic water use and, with new development, even more water would need to be extracted from the lake. Given the dryness of the past couple of years and the rather limited snowmelt from this winter, the amount of water is not going to increase any time soon.

Coach Larry Robinson is using the break in the schedule for a four-day sojourn to the Lake Arrowhead area. The Kings will practice in Blue Jay this week before Friday's season opener against the New York Islanders. "We still have time to work on a number of things--mainly getting rid of our bumps and bruises," Robinson said. "And with the power play, working on bringing the puck up and setting up in the zone." Meanwhile, Monday's waiver draft passed and the Kings did not lose any players.

An injured hiker who had been missing for five days was rescued near Lake Arrowhead on Sunday after he started what turned into a small brush fire. Rodney Trumbo, 55, was reported missing Tuesday when he didn't return from a hike in the San Bernardino Mountains, the San Bernardino Sun reported.  He had used a cellphone to call his girlfriend to tell her he was injured. Trumbo also complained of being dehydrated and in pain. Rescue crews spotted Trumbo after responding to a brush fire that burned a 20-foot-by-30-foot area, the Sun reported.

The news traveled quickly, by way of phone calls and text messages, spreading throughout the sport of figure skating. The Ice Castle was closing down. The small rink, nestled amid pines beside Lake Arrowhead, had served as an unlikely mecca for skaters from around the world, turning out champions for the better part of three decades. Michelle Kwan trained there, as did Robin Cousins, Nicole Bobek, Chen Lu and Surya Bonaly. Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo, the gold medal pair from the 2010 Winter Olympics, made it their home base.

Where is the John Muir of the San Gabriel Mountains? The Ansel Adams of the San Bernardinos? The Donner Party of the San Jacintos? All right, maybe one Donner Party was enough. But Muir, Adams and company are among the reasons the inland mountains of Southern California have never quite matched the attention won by their taller northern neighbors, the Sierra Nevada. Still, hikers, board-riders, skiers and snowball-tossers in Southern California find no shortage of peace and exhilaration.

Think your email, and your money, are safe? Think again. Earlier this year, the FBI warned that "cyber-criminals are compromising the email accounts of U.S. individuals and businesses" and using the accounts to arrange fraudulent cash transfers. Lake Arrowhead resident Bernie Williams never saw that warning. Nor did he think anything like this could happen to him. Now he's $8,629 poorer. "It's such a sophisticated scam," Williams, 70, said with grudging admiration. "If it wasn't a crime, I'd give the guy an Oscar.

A 3.9-magnitude earthquake shook the mountainous area around Lake Arrowhead Tuesday evening, apparently causing no serious damage. Caltech seismologists said the quake at 7:13 p.m. was centered six miles northeast of the lake. Few residents of San Bernardino or other areas below Lake Arrowhead reported feeling the temblor. "It was just one sharp jolt," said Stella Kerkvliet, manager of Jensen's Minute Shoppe in the village of Cedar Glen on the east side of the lake.

First came the footprint. Then a series of them. Then a boy's rain-soaked striped shirt laid out on a log. By Tuesday afternoon, a four-member search team, one of dozens scoping the thickly forested San Bernardino National Forest, had the boy — alive, though tired and hungry. "Thank you … you saved me," the boy said in a low voice. Joshua Robb, an autistic 8-year-old who had been missing for more than 24 hours after running away from his elementary school in Twin Peaks, was found in "pretty good shape" in a rugged ravine 1 1/2 miles from the school, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials said.

Times reader Kathleen Parris took this photo while visiting Lake Arrowhead with her husband, Greg, to celebrate their 40 th wedding anniversary. The telescope and guardrail in this photo are a little more frost-covered than I'd expect, even for Lake Arrowhead in February. Fortunately, Parris provided a second photo to shed light on this curious sight. "Choppy waters and cold weather combined to form these icicles along the railing near the Lake Arrowhead docks," Parris says.
