Several big striped bass are being reported at Lake San Antonio near Paso Robles, just in time for Sunday's Father's Day Derby, when a tagged striper will be worth $50,000. The stripers have recently been biting on the surface near the South Shore Marina. Using shad for bait, Joyce Lemay of Hanford landed a 21-pounder, and Jim Mansell of Coalinga caught a 17-pound 6-ounce fish. WILLOW BEACH--Excellent for rainbow trout, mostly two to four pounds. Several limits reported.

Lake San Antonio is located, a park brochure claims, "in the Central Coast area of California." Well, maybe. The lake's geographical position near the back side of Big Sur gives it some claim to Central Coast fame. So does its location within the boundaries of one of California's best-known coastal counties--Monterey. Cool winters and the spring wildflower displays in San Antonio Valley also bolster the lake's Central Coast status.

BOAT-RENTAL AGENCIES are prevalent at Southern California lakes, and all kinds of boats can be rented. At Big Bear Lake, for instance, the marinas rent out canoes, kayaks, rowboats, wind surfers and pontoon boats. Jet skis are also available. Isabella Lake, in Kern County, has water-ski boats for rent; and paddle boats, canoes, aquacycles and now sailboats are available at the lower lake at Castaic Lake. Lake Elsinore's selection includes rowboats, pontoons, pedal boats, surfboards and floats.

Regarding "A Big Little Dream" by Robert Smaus, Nov. 30: My wife and I bought 50 acres near Paso Robles/Lake San Antonio in January and have been having similar experiences. We don't have water (I'm planning a well in June) but utilities run near the property. Our property is 75% covered with oak trees and is rolling to steep. We are hoping to move there within five years. We go to the land about every other week -- about three hours each way.

Dr. Mark Song knows all about pain, his and others. For 14 years he has worked as an emergency room doctor at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, where he has seen the trauma and suffering of others. But for the past four years, Song, of Irvine, has learned another kind of pain, the type that comes from competing in grueling triathlons featuring a 2.4-mile swim in the ocean, 112 miles of bicycling and a 26-mile run.

Freshwater Largemouth bass: The fish are shallow at most lakes. Perris, Poway, Diamond Valley, Castaic, Casitas, San Vicente, Isabella and Success are good choices. Crawdads, plastics and swimbaits work. Not all bass are spawning, but more will soon. Try deep water drop-offs too. Diamond Valley, Al Bennett, Yucaipa, caught a 12-12 on a jerk bait and Kurt Hodges, Hemet, landed five bass totaling 31-4, including a 12-0. At Casitas, Art Alanzo, Santa Paula, caught a 14-0 on a Gitzit.

"You only turn 40 once," Southwest Airlines says on its online sale page. Really? I feel as though Southwest has been ballyhooing birthday promotions forever -- not that I'm complaining. The airline Tuesday launched an autumn airfare sale with one-way fares of $40, $80 and $120 depending on how far you fly. But think fast because the offer is good only until Thursday. And be patient -- Southwest's website may be slow to upload. The deal: The Celebrating 40 Years With $40 Fares One-Way sale works this way: $40 for short flights (up to 450 miles)
