And now, introducing the Ventura County Life Valentine's Day Dinner Party. For an evening of stimulating conversation and probable food fights, we submit the following six couples not made in heaven: 1) Madge Schaefer, the hot-tempered former county supervisor who was ousted by voters in last June's elections, and . . . Doug Johnson, the top aide whom Schaefer ordered out of her office last November when she discovered he had accepted a job with her successor.

The first thing you should know about the new Jack Nicklaus-designed Sherwood Country Club golf course in Thousand Oaks is that it is simply magnificent. The second thing you should be aware of is that it is highly unlikely that you will ever play on it. And you are probably only going to get one chance a year to actually see it, unless you're looking for work and happen to be handy with a weed whacker.

Q: What do the grass tennis courts at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks have that Wimbledon does not? A: A playing surface that agrees with Jimmy Connors. After a workout at the club near Lake Sherwood this week, Connors playfully mocked Wimbledon's grass courts, where a return is not just a return but an adventure. Forget that the surface is less than smooth. What annoys Connors is the way a ball hits the lines, spews up a cloud of chalk dust and ricochets one way or the other.

They arrived in Mercedes-Benzes and Jaguars, Toyotas and Buicks. They wore T-shirts, shorts, sun hats and Hawaiian-print shirts. They carried baby strollers and cameras and waited anxiously for air-conditioned coaches to whisk them off to the sights on the tour. Universal Studios? Disneyland? Nope. It was Sherwood, the exclusive residential enclave conceived of and owned by billionaire developer David Murdock.

Slow and steady leads the race -- at least through two rounds and especially when the golf course is soggy. Jim Furyk shot an uneventful one-under-par 71 Friday to keep the lead after two rounds of the Chevron World Challenge, while Camilo Villegas, K.J. Choi and Anthony Kim moved into contention with decidedly more drama. They finished two shots behind Furyk's two-day total of five-under 139 at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks.

"And now I just want to stay in my new home and nest," she said, "but I'm pretty much on the road."

Westlake Village resident Ben Schulman constantly tinkers with the formula for serenity on Westlake Lake. Kill too much algae and light will cause weeds on the lake floor to sprout as much as six inches a day. Let the algae grow, and within days a green carpet will grow thick enough to virtually prevent a duck from getting its feet wet crossing the lake.

The excavation of dirt and debris in the dry bed of Lake Sherwood near Thousand Oaks, part of a plan to refill the lake and develop the surrounding land, has been halted by the Ventura County Planning Department because no work permit had been filed. Dennis Davis, county planning director, said the Murdock Development Co. had violated an ordinance requiring a permit if more than two feet of dirt, or 50 cubic yards, is removed.
