His scoring meant more than just helping the Lakers defeat the Clippers. His scoring meant more than just putting up another solid statistical game. The 26 points that Pau Gasol scored during the Lakers' 112-104 victory over the Clippers on Friday night at Staples Center meant the All-Star forward had contributed to a worthy cause. Gasol donated $1,000 for every point he scored toward to a fund set up by Direct Relief International to assist those affected by the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan this month.

Reporting from Boston -- The man who likes to abuse his own bald head — either as a way to psych himself up or express simple frustration — was the one trying to ramp down the energy on Sunday. Boston's Kevin Garnett certainly won't ever become Mr. Zen, but Celtics Coach Doc Rivers found himself somewhat amused when the emotional Garnett went against type in the Celtics' 92-86 victory in Game 5 of the NBA Finals at TD Garden. "That tells you how screwed up we are," Rivers said.

Pau Gasol won't ever be confused with Kurt Rambis or Rick Mahorn , but, yes, that was him in the middle of an on-court storm in Phoenix the other night. Hardly an enforcer, the finesse Lakers forward was responding to what was asked of him — standing strong in the paint on defense while trying to reduce the number of lay-ups and dunks by opposing big men. Gasol already had been beat for a three-point play in the game by Amare Stoudemire , arriving too late to stop a lay-up and then sending the Suns forward to the foul line, so Gasol made sure that another Suns post player, Louis Amundson , wouldn't get an easy look on a fourth-quarter drive to the basket.

Western Conference coaches were able to overlook the 17 games Pau Gasol has missed this season. But they weren't able to ignore Andrew Bynu m's up-and-down season with the Lakers. Gasol will join Kobe Bryant at the All-Star game on Feb. 14, the second time in as many seasons the Lakers forward was selected to play as a reserve for the West team. Bynum, however, did not make the All-Star team after averaging 15.8 points and 8.4 rebounds a game. He started off strong, collecting double figures in points and rebounds in eight of his first nine games -- while Gasol was sidelined -- but endured a stretch of 23 consecutive games without a double-double.

The bar has been raised for Pau Gasol ? by Lakers Coach Phil Jackson and assistant Brian Shaw . They want him to be more of a force for the Lakers when the regular season starts Tuesday night at Staples Center against the Houston Rockets. Jackson and Shaw maintained that Gasol has to be The Man for perhaps the first month of the season because, as Shaw said, "We're kind of limping going into the season. " They want to see more from Gasol in the regular season than what he displayed during the exhibition season, when Jackson lamented once during training camp that the All-Star has "been on vacation.

Reporting from Dallas A select group of sports reporters had to stop and think for a second when handed a ballot last June. Should Pau Gasol be the most valuable player of the NBA Finals? He wasn't chosen, the honor going to Kobe Bryant , but Gasol took two of nine votes. Now he'd get votes only for the Lakers' least valuable player. Gasol had another forgettable night Friday in a 98-92 loss to Dallas, scoring 12 points on five-for-13 shooting in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals.

The summer itinerary couldn't have been any better for Pau Gasol. Win an NBA championship in June. Go to South Africa a few weeks later to watch home country Spain win soccer's World Cup. Teach teenagers how to play basketball on an NBA-sponsored trip to India in August. Head to Spain for some downtime in September. A taxing summer it was not, by design. The Lakers forward didn't play for the Spanish basketball team in the world championships and didn't do anything competitively until some one-on-one a couple of weeks ago against his brother, Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol.

The moment Clippers forward Blake Griffin leaped into the air, Lakers forward Pau Gasol became nothing more than a prop. Griffin extended his left forearm into Gasol's face and threw down a powerful one-handed dunk. The momentum sent Gasol tumbling to the ground and the 18,997 at Staples Center into a frenzy. "You don't really see what happened," Gasol recalled after the Lakers' 113-108 victory Wednesday over the Clippers. "It was quick, a hit-and-run kind of thing, right?"

WASHINGTON - Steve Nash is running and shooting and hoping to practice next week, all good signs for the Lakers. But what about Pau Gasol? The four-time All-Star continues to deal with knee tendinitis, sitting out his seventh game Friday against Washington. Using the standard for NFL injury reports, Gasol declared himself doubtful for Sunday's game against Philadelphia, questionable for Tuesday against Charlotte and probable Dec. 22 against Golden State. Yep, looks like at least another week before he returns.
