Miami receiver Lamar Thomas will miss his second consecutive season because of an injury. The Dolphins put Thomas on injured reserve Tuesday, the day after he broke and dislocated his right hip after catching a five-yard pass and being hit on the first play of an exhibition against Green Bay. Thomas missed last season because of a left shoulder injury. The Dolphins also said Jay Fiedler would start at quarterback in their exhibition finale at New Orleans on Friday.

Attorneys for University of Miami receiver Lamar Thomas, indicted Aug. 18 on charges stemming from a financial-aid scandal, obtained a last-minute legal agreement that cleared him to play in tonight's season opener at Iowa. Under an agreement with the U.S. attorney's office, the cases of Thomas and reserve running back Jason Marucci--also indicted--will be turned over to the U.S. Pretrial Services Office.

The arraignment of University of Miami football players Lamar Thomas, the team's leading receiver last season, and Jason Marucci, a reserve running back, was continued for a second time. The hearing to be held today was tentatively reset for Sept. 10. Thomas and Marucci were indicted Aug. 18 for their role in a Pell Grant scandal at the school. They have requested that the U.S. attorney's office drop the charges and allow them to enroll in a pretrial diversion program.

Doctors repaired torn cartilage in receiver Fred Barnett's right knee, but extensive damage may keep him out of the Dolphins' lineup longer than first expected. "It may be for a significant period of time," said Coach Jimmy Johnson. "I can't predict." Barnett, 30, will be examined in two weeks before doctors decide on the next move. He injured his right knee in a Thursday practice against the Washington Redskins when he planted his leg while making a cut on a pass pattern.

A sailor was convicted Wednesday of attacking two women he accosted in the parking structure of the Long Beach Plaza mall last November. A Long Beach Superior Court jury found Lamar Thomas, 22, guilty of 13 criminal counts, including rape, kidnaping and assault with a deadly weapon. Thomas, a cook aboard the Long Beach-based Ingraham, testified last week that he had consensual sex with the women. But the jury believed the two victims. One woman testified that she was kidnaped at gunpoint Nov.
