The Chicago-based singer/songwriter/violinist Andrew Bird has pared back his self-consciously virtuosic playing and focuses on perfect sounds and turns of melody. During his live sets, Bird builds rafters-shaking string arrangements with the aid of a looping pedal, but on record he treats his violin as one complementary instrument among many. Largo, 366 N. La Cienega Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. Thu.-Fri. $40. largo-la.com.

Wednesday night at Largo on the first night of violinist, singer and songwriter Andrew Bird's three-night stint, he and his two-man band encircled a single microphone as though they were performing for a 1930s radio broadcast. Framed by the red velvet of Largo's curtains and backdrop, Bird harmonized while imagining the end of the world, and a sold-out audience in the little theater sat quietly rapt. “It's gonna rain Champagne and the hills are gonna dance,” sang Bird, a skinny, urbanely handsome gentleman, as he fiddled out the minor-key moan of “When That Helicopter Comes.” Written in 2000 by the Handsome Family, the song predicts a “power in the blood” and trees that “shake and scream” as the end arrives -- followed by helicopters.

Comedian Tig Notaro's downtown Los Angeles loft is oddly intact considering she is moving across the country in the morning. She's about to start a new job with Comedy Central, she has a new book deal with Ecco, her debut comedy album, "Good One," is now No. 2 in its category on iTunes, and reporters from Vanity Fair and the New Yorker are calling later about a new comedy recording of hers on Louis C.K.'s website. Still, as she relaxes on the taupe couch that divides her industrial-modern kitchen and airy, sun-lit living room, Notaro seems utterly unflustered.
