Cal Coach Bruce Snyder, Stanford's Dennis Green and Washington offensive coordinator Keith Gilbertson are the top candidates to become head football coach at Arizona State. Athletic Director Charles Harris has interviewed Green to succeed Larry Marmie, who was fired after the Sun Devils went 6-5 last season. Harris also plans to interview Snyder and Gilbertson.

Larry Marmie, former Arizona State head coach, accepted a job as defensive coordinator at Tennesee. Ohio State had hired Marmie in February as a linebackers coach. "He was offered the Tennessee defensive coordinator's job, and I guess for a considerable amount of money," Ohio State Coach John Cooper said. "But I'll be honest with you, I don't think it's right. The timing is not good."

Arizona State defensive tackle Shane Collins has decided to postpone surgery on his injured right knee and attempt a comeback this season with the 21st-ranked Sun Devils. Collins, a junior, was injured Sept. 8. He was expected to begin conditioning today with a heavy brace. "At this point, we just got to see what happens after he's had a chance to run around a little bit," Arizona State Coach Larry Marmie said Wednesday. "There have been players who played with that injury."

Arizona State fired football Coach Larry Marmie Wednesday after a 6-5 season highlighted by a victory over intrastate rival Arizona. Arizona State Athletic Director Charles S. Harris said at a news conference that Marmie's contract won't be extended when it expires June 30. He said an "intensive search" would begin immediately for a successor. Marmie had a four-year record of 22-21-1 with no bowl appearances. The Sun Devils finished fifth in the Pacific 10 with a 4-4 record.
