Kings draft picks: The answer to the Totally Random trivia question in Friday's Sports section -- that Larry Murphy was the only other NHL Hall of Famer besides Luc Robitaille to be drafted by the Kings -- was incorrect. Billy Smith, who had a Hall of Fame career primarily with the New York Islanders, was also drafted by the Kings.

A relatively unknown candidate for the Democratic nomination for state insurance commissioner, Larry Murphy of Temecula, sued state party Chairman Edmund G. Brown Jr. and other party officials for $10 million for denying him a place on the rostrum when the party held a debate among insurance commissioner candidates April 7, before voting to give television commentator Bill Press its endorsement. Murphy said he paid a $100 filing fee but was the only candidate denied a chance to debate.

Being benched two games ago appears to have been the boost that Larry Murphy needed. The veteran defenseman scored a goal and assisted on three others as the Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 5-3, Friday. Washington Coach Bryan Murray called Murphy's benching "an attention-getter" and added that the defenseman "has been working harder, and when he works hard, things will happen for him." Murphy shrugged off his single-game sitdown.

The Pittsburgh Penguins obtained defenseman Larry Murphy and Peter Taglianetti in a trade with the Minnesota North Stars for defenseman Jim Johnson and Chris Dalhquist. Murphy, 29, was the Kings' No. 1 pick in the 1980 draft.

Tom Barrasso stopped 32 shots Monday night as the Pittsburgh Penguins clinched the Northeast Division title with a 4-0 victory over the Senators at Ottawa. It was Barrasso's second shutout of the season and 21st of his career. Mario Lemieux, Larry Murphy, Tomas Sandstrom and Shawn McEachern scored. Montreal 3, Hartford 1--Vincent Damphousse scored twice as the Canadiens broke their eight-game winless streak on the road.

The Kings will go for their third straight victory tonight when they open a two-game trip against the New York Islanders at the Nassau Coliseum (6 p.m. KGIL, KWVE-FM). Center Brent Sutter, the Islanders' second-leading scorer with with 101 points, is expected to miss the game with a shoulder injury. Sutter was injured when he was checked by Larry Murphy and Peter Anderson of the Washington Capitals in the second period of a 6-4 win Saturday night.
