Larry Williams is ready to attack. He bends his knees, braces his arms against his thighs and digs a medieval ax -- a gutter adz -- into a piece of pine, chomping slices here and there like a frenzied woodchuck. In seconds, a flurry of chips covers the floor of his Sun Valley workshop. Stopping an inch short of breaking through the pine oval slab, he sets down the broad blade and catches his breath.

Larry Williams came to the University of San Diego a freshman outfielder hoping to get some playing time. It wasn't until the Toreros took a trip to Loyola Marymount last month that his coaches and teammates became aware of his other talent. When Williams invited the team and coaching staff to his house for a barbecue, his mother slipped in a tape of the "Mary Thomas Story," a made-for-television movie about the mother of Detroit Piston point guard Isiah Thomas.

I am sure that there are a number of professionals in OSHA, and the few remaining wood-shop teachers, who will have violent stomach cramps as they view Larry Williams using an adz in a grossly unsafe manner in your article on Windsor chairs ("Hewing to Tradition With His Bare Hands," Nov. 13). The worker is wearing unprotected shoes. An adz will shear off toes easier than a wood knot. A device holding the wood would permit the worker to keep his feet splayed and so be less subject to injury.
