It was the "positive tone" of Glendale and the commitment of its civic leaders to redevelopment in the private and public sector that motivated Smith & Hricik Development Co. of Century City to build that community's tallest building. Construction is under way on the firm's $48-million, 21-story office building at 550 N. Brand Blvd., one block south of the Ventura Freeway. The 287,000-square-foot office project, a joint venture of Smith & Hricik with Hillman Properties West Inc.

A group of dissatisfied homeowners has slapped City Councilman Larry Zarian with a second lawsuit alleging that he and several business associates developed and sold poorly built condominiums. The lawsuit, filed in May by the Mount View Terrace homeowners association in Glendale Superior Court, accuses Zarian and his partners Zaven Antanesian and Frank Schrage of failing to repair myriad problems over the past three years at their condo complex at 2706 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose.

Larry Zarian has high hopes for the troubled Metropolitan Transportation Authority: hopes of regaining the public trust, of exorcising provincial politics from the MTA's decisions, of pushing the cash-strapped agency from the red to the black. By all accounts, the longtime Glendale city councilman, who inherited the MTA chairmanship Saturday, has the energy and ambition to try to accomplish the monumental task he has laid out for himself.

Larry Zarian Former Glendale mayor and TV, radio host Larry Zarian, 73, a former mayor of Glendale and the first Armenian American to be elected to the City Council, died of blood cancer Thursday at Glendale Adventist Medical Center. Zarian also served as a board member for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and as a state transportation commissioner. He had his own local cable television show, "The Larry Zarian Forum," and also had hosted a talk-radio program on KIEV that focused on political issues.

The chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, bothered by a controversial new transit contract worth nearly $1 million, said Monday that the agency must do a better job of determining how its money is spent. Triggering the reaction was a story in The Times Sunday disclosing that the MTA's sister agency has hired an armored-truck company to haul cash from Metrolink commuter trains despite the fact that the MTA fired the firm over alleged mismanagement.

The forum conducted by Glendale Mayor Larry Zarian has been canceled this month due to vacation schedules. The evening forum, which takes place the second Thursday of each month at City Hall, will resume Sept. 9.
