For the first time in five years, the Las Virgenes Unified School District Board of Trustees has approved a budget without major cuts or class size increases. "Hopefully, we will not have to make additional cuts for the next three years," said district Assistant Supt. Donald Zimring. "Then, we might be able to add things that were cut back to the budget at a modest rate."

Citizens interested in voting in the Nov. 7 county elections must register by Tuesday, according to the county registrar-recorder's office. Brent Noyes is the new principal of Willow Elementary School, the Las Virgenes Unified School District Board of Education announced this week. He has served six years as an elementary school principal in the La Canada Unified School District and worked as an administrative intern and an elementary school teacher in the Glendale School District. "I'm very excited about it," Noyes said of his appointment in Agoura Hills.

Faced with a fourth straight year of budget cuts, the Las Virgenes Unified School District board has approved an increase in class sizes and eliminated funding for programs to help struggling elementary school students. As part of a $496,000 budget reduction package approved Tuesday night, the board cut a transitional program for children who have good learning skills but are deemed too immature emotionally to succeed in the first grade. The board also cut a reading program.

Robert Oserin, a candidate for the Las Virgenes Unified School District Board of Education, has unofficially dropped out of the race, leaving eight hopefuls for three positions on the panel. Although his name will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot, Oserin, a 65-year-old retired insurance executive, said he is discouraging voters from choosing him.

The incumbent president of the Las Virgenes Unified School District board was among the leaders in early returns from Tuesday's at-large race for three seats on the panel. Barbara Bowman was the sole incumbent seeking reelection in the Las Virgenes Unified School District race. Fellow board members Betty Noling and Ron Jauch declined to run for reelection. Four challengers were seeking to fill the three seats.
