Walk into eye surgeon Charles Manger's office, and two things stand out. First, there's the oversized waiting room with enough seating for a small army. And then there's the large bin brimming with eyeglasses cast aside by patients who have come here for laser eye surgery. Manger and his colleagues are performing about 75 laser eye surgeries a week, especially the procedure known as Lasik.

Laser Vision Centers Inc. and four of its executives will pay $1.5 million in fines to settle charges that they enabled their eye-surgery lasers to be altered to treat a wider range of patients, the Food and Drug Administration said. According to an FDA complaint, St. Louis-based Laser Vision shipped key cards used to operate the lasers to Bermuda. There, the key cards were altered to enable lasers to treat patients with nearsightedness and astigmatism beyond the FDA-approved range.

Bausch & Lomb Inc. said its fourth-quarter and full-year profit will miss estimates and the company will cut 350 more jobs, citing a slowdown in sales of laser vision-correction machines. The world's largest eye-care company also said it settled a patent lawsuit filed by rival Visx Inc., agreeing to pay Visx an unspecified royalty for each Lasik eye-surgery procedure in the U.S. done using Bausch & Lomb's lasers.
