Eddie Lara, raised in Pico Rivera, the son of Mexican immigrants and the only one in his family to go to college, could have enrolled at UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law this fall. The honors student, who completed a double major in political science and sociology at UC Berkeley in four years, was among 48 Latinos offered spots in the prestigious law school's 270-member first-year class.

On an emotional first day of classes at UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law, the lone black member of the 270-student incoming class revealed himself Monday to be a Bloomington, Ind., native who values diversity and was "surprised and disappointed" to learn of his solitary status.

Twenty-five years ago, a couple of Sun Valley Rotarians decided that what the San Fernando Valley needed was a law school. One was a lawyer who had attended night school, the other a public relations man. Together they formed the San Fernando Valley College of Law, and it was an instant success. The '60s were boom times for law schools. Enrollment soared and tuitions poured in. The lawyer and the press agent were soon working at the school full-time. Things are not quite so rosy nowadays.

For Sharon McPhail, the last two decades--the years since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.--have been a saga of struggle and triumph. For Donald Scott, the years have brought a sharp slide back into poverty. McPhail grew up in Cambridge, Mass., so poor that "my brother said if we hadn't had roaches, we wouldn't have had anything to play with at all."
