In a bid to strengthen his grip on power, Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic dissolved his Parliament on Wednesday and called early elections for Dec. 19. The move follows the collapse of an unofficial coalition between Milosevic's ruling Socialist Party and its ultranationalist satellite, the Serbian Radical Party, headed by Vojislav Seselj.

Parliament on Saturday approved a package of constitutional amendments designed to make the economy more market-oriented and ease the worst economic crisis since World War II. The amendments also would give Serbia more control over its autonomous provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina. The crisis has been fueled by hundreds of thousands of Serbs protesting the alleged harassment of Serbs in Kosovo by the majority ethnic Albanians.
