In compiling my top 10 list for Legoland California , I tried to combine must-see attractions with  one-of-a-kind rides you can’t find anywhere else. Photo Gallery : View the Top 10 Legoland California rides and attractions Legoland perfectly hits its demographic of minivan-driving soccer moms and their stroller-bound charges and 'tween siblings. The pink-knuckle rides offer a tiny dose of mild thrills for the littlest kids, who are often underserved at typical theme parks . That said, the Carlsbad kiddie park features a disappointingly high number of attractions that parents can't ride with their kids.

One thing you have to understand about the Land of Chima: The lions are the good guys. They're the ones who seek to protect the kingdom from the battle-prone crocodiles on Cartoon Network's TV series and video games. So it's not surprising that the largest piece of Legoland California's yet-to-open Chima-themed water park is a 2,116-pound Lion Temple Arch. The arch, 18 feet off the ground, was put in place last weekend at the emerging Legends of Chima Water Park that's slated to open May 24. "The Lego arch will stream water beneath the massive lion head at the entrance to the Lion Temple Wave Pool," a Lego announcement says.

Water parks are big drawing cards for kids when it comes to summer vacations. The Oasis Water Park comes with a stay at Arizona Grand Resort in Phoenix. The park features a big-wave pool, river tubing, an eight-story tower with water slides, and a hot tub. And now you can get a package that includes tickets to Legoland California . Dress like a vampire this Friday and you'll get free entry into Legoland California in Carlsbad. The goal is to set a Guinness World Record for the most people dressed as vampires in a single location. The number to beat is 1,039, which set a record two years ago. The deal: The free entry begins at 4 p.m. for adults and children who wear fangs, a black cape and other vampire-esque accents. (Check out the dress code , which is different for boys and girls.) Registration begins at 4:15 p.m. (or you may register online )

Legoland California, already the fastest-growing amusement park in North America, announced a $20-million expansion Tuesday, including a new themed area and a 36,000-square-foot aquarium. A 350-room Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa -- with an entrance to the park -- is also in the works, fitting into the larger strategy to extend the length of time guests spend at the park.

The new "Legends of Chima" 4-D film coming to Legoland California this spring will take moviegoers to a fantasy world where animal tribes battle for possession of a mystical energy source known as chi . Scheduled to premiere March 7 at the Carlsbad kiddie park, the 4-D film will feature special effects using wind, smoke, water and motion. The 12-minute animated movie tied to a new line of Lego construction toys is also scheduled to debut this year at Legoland theme parks in Florida, Denmark, Germany, England and Malaysia . The " Legends of Chima " story line follows four young animals on a journey through the battle-torn kingdom before concluding with a chariot race pitting lion-leader Laval against the evil crocodile Cragger.

Legoland California will add a new dinosaur-themed roller coaster as part of its fifth-anniversary expansion this year. Coastersaurus, a family coaster from German designer Gerstlauer, will anchor Dino Island, which will also feature an archeological-dig play area. Dino Island will open April 1. Fun Town Fire Academy, a firetruck racing ride, will debut on Memorial Day weekend.

If you're planning a long stay at Legoland California in Carlsbad this fall, Travelzoo's offer of $90 for a five-day pass might be just the ticket. That means visitors can spend as much time as they like at roller coasters, Miniland USA, tube slides and the aquarium. The deal: The pass comes from Travelzoo, and you must buy it from its website. The resort-hopper pass for five days covers admission to the Legoland theme park , the water park and the Sea Life Aquarium . Passes cost $90 for adults and $80 for children 3 to 12 years old, and expire five days after the first day you use them.  When: No deadline on buying the pass, which is good through Oct. 27. Details: The pass deal is a good value, even if you don't use it for the full five days.

The summer amusement park season is starting to ramp up, and West Inn and Suites in Carlsbad, has low room prices for families who want to visit Legoland California. Rooms for two adults and two children start at $159 a night -- and that includes breakfast and parking. The deal: Legoland California just opened its on-site hotel, but West Inn and Suites might be a cheaper alternative. It is 10 minutes away and offers freebies such as cookies and milk before bedtime, a hot breakfast buffet or a grab-and-go breakfast, parking, Wi-Fi and a shuttle to Legoland and other stops in Carlsbad.

Are you a knight, a pirate or an adventurer? Those are the room themes offered at the new Legoland California Hotel in Carlsbad, Calif., that's set to open ahead of schedule on April 5. Pick your favorite theme and reserve a room starting at $149 a night and a kid-friendly package starting at $209 a night. The deal: The three-story, 250-room hotel will feature more than 3,400 models made from 3 million Lego bricks, a company statement says. Smoke-breathing dragons, a Castle Play area and a pool are some of the amenities that come with a stay at this amusement park hotel.

The weather forecast for Legoland California this summer calls for a 100% chance of getting 100% soaking wet. PHOTOS: Pirate Reef water ride at Legoland California The new Pirate Reef water attraction opened over Memorial Day weekend at the Carlsbad kiddie park with a pair of life-size Lego pirate ships flanking the splash zone of the classic shoot-the-chutes ride. For its relatively modest size, the 25-foot-tall attraction built by Florida-based Hopkins Amusement Rides generates a surprisingly enormous splash.
