There was something about Legrand Clegg's complaint about Hollywood producers of Jewish background who create negative black stereotypes (letter, Feb. 16) that struck a resonant chord in my Jewish consciousness. It was the fact that the religiously Jewish community has long complained that the entertainment industry's portrayal of Jews has been predominantly negative as well, portraying them as either alienated in general (hustlers or cynics), or happily disappearing by intermarriage.

During this week's NAACP convention in Los Angeles, a report was released showing evidence that blacks are woefully underrepresented among Hollywood management. As a shocker, this one compares to Surgeon General reports showing that people who suck tobacco smoke into their lungs are apt to die sooner than those who don't.

The Times is to be commended for printing the articles by Brown, Legrand Clegg and Jewell Taylor Gibbs (March 17). I am one of the "white masses" but I am deeply distressed at the killings in the black inner-city neighborhoods and at society's abandonment of the children from the moment of birth. They are programmed to poor education, to drugs, jail and/or early death. So long as these deplorable conditions exist for blacks in the inner cities, no one can live in peace or tranquility.

Reader LeGrand Clegg's etymology is as flawed as his sociology [Viewpoint, Jan. 3]. The reason people call Latrell Sprewell a thug isn't because he's black; it's because he's a thug. The word "thug," far from being a "code word for blacks," came into common usage some two centuries ago in colonial India, where there were hardly any black basketball players. It's an absolute certainty that the epithet has been applied to vastly more white punks than black punks. The primary definition of "thug" given by Webster's is "a brutal ruffian."

A group of city and school district officials called Thursday for an investigation into possible violations of election law by district officials in support of a $107-million school bond measure on April's ballot. Speaking at a news conference, Mayor Omar Bradley and other elected officials called attention to a memo sent from the district's communication office to elementary and middle school principals. The memo asked principals to sign a form letter encouraging parents to register to vote.

LeGrand Clegg just doesn't get it. In his response (letter, July 20) to a Times editorial that rightly castigates him for his bigotry, Clegg first denies that his views are anti-Semitic, and then launches into another attack on "Jewish racism in Hollywood." The fact is that Clegg has a track record, many years long, of anti-Semitic rabble-rousing, scurrilous attacks on Israel, and a fixation on Jews in the entertainment industry that borders on obsessive. He is evidently unable to understand that any complaints he has about Hollywood must be addressed to the entertainment industry, not to the "Jews."
