Senior right-hander David Bladow pitched a three-hitter as UC Irvine defeated Loyola Marymount, 8-0, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday that was the season opener for both teams. Baldow walked the first batter he faced then retired the next nine. Bladow, who was 5-7 last season, had seven strikeouts. Irvine scored a single run in the first inning, added four in the fifth, and three more in the eighth.

Marieke Veltman won the 100 meters (11.8 seconds), 100-meter hurdles (14.2) and the long jump (20 feet 5 3/4) to lead host UC Irvine to a victory in a four-way nonconference women's track and field meet Saturday. The Anteaters won 14 of the 17 scored events and finished with 236 points. Cornell was second at 125 1/2, Cal State Fullerton third with 81 and Navy fourth with 62 1/2. Heather Killeen of Fullerton won the 3,000 meters in 9:50.1, and teammate Kristen Peters the 5,000 in 17:04.5.

In its third attempt of the season, the Southern California College men's basketball team defeated Cal Baptist, 92-85, Tuesday to move back into a first-place tie in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The Vanguards (19-6, 6-2 in conference) trailed by one point at halftime but scored the first 10 points of the second half. Rick Witmer scored a game-high 23 points, making six of 12 three-point attempts, and Mike West added 20 points for the Vanguards.

Jim Betzsold had a two-out, run-scoring double in the 11th inning to lift Cal State Fullerton to an 8-7 victory over Stanford in a nonconference baseball game Sunday at Stanford. Betzsold's double scored Bret Hemphill, who had doubled with two outs. Ted Silva (1-0), a sophomore right-hander, completed four innings of shutout relief for the victory. Cal State Fullerton (2-1) took two of three games in the season-opener for both teams.

Mark Presho responded to a warm welcome from his hometown crowd and had 13 kills to lead Team Paul Mitchell to a 15-6 victory over Team OP in the men's final of a Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League tournament here Sunday. Presho had a lot of help from two-time Olympic gold medalist Craig Buck, who had 11 kills and five blocks. But Presho, who played for Edison High and the University of Hawaii, clearly was the crowd favorite. "It was awesome.

Cal State Fullerton scored the final eight points of the game and beat Pacific, 68-61, in a Big West Conference women's basketball game Sunday at Fullerton. Fullerton went ahead, 62-61, on a driving basket by Marissa Frial with 2 minutes 38 seconds left. Frail made two free throws and Shayla Bradshaw made a basket and two free throws for Fullerton's final six points. Bradshaw led Fullerton with 19 points and Koko Lahanas added 17, all in the second half, for the Titans.

Perhaps it's his name, evoking images of hard-rock lead singers. Maybe it's his stoic intensity on the volleyball court. It might be the ferociousness with which he spikes the ball. Whatever the reason, Axel Hagar of Cal State Northridge is fast becoming a crowd favorite at Matador Gymnasium. Hagar had 13 kills to help power host Northridge to a 15-4, 15-8, 15-5 victory over UC Irvine in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match Friday night.

Craig Fairbrother, Phil Nevin and Tony Banks homered during a seven-run sixth inning as Cal State Fullerton routed Fresno State, 12-3, in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday at Amerige Park. Fairbrother's homer, his sixth, came with one on. There were two runners on when Nevin hit his 16th, and Banks followed with his eighth. Banks was three for five, driving in five runs as the Titans, ranked seventh by Baseball America, improved to 25-9, 8-3. Fresno State is 23-13, 5-3.

Team Norelco is the team to beat in the Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League, but it stumbled out of the blocks Friday in a tournament at Huntington Beach. Norelco, which has won the last two tournaments and a total of three this season, lost to Team Paul Mitchell, 15-5, in its first game of pool play. "We weren't blocking any balls, we weren't playing defense and we weren't being a team," Norelco captain Samantha Shaver said. "There was no balance and it definitely showed."

Titan starting pitcher Tim Dixon struck out a career-high nine and gave up only five hits over seven innings as Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 8-3, Saturday at Titan Field. Dixon (6-0) made one mistake, serving up a three-run homer to designated hitter Jon Macalutas in the third inning, which briefly put the Mustangs ahead, 3-2. But the Titans (22-3) came back in the fourth on consecutive singles by Jeremy Giambi, Brian Loyd and Joe Fraser, tying the score, 3-3.
