Politicians use them. Ophthalmologists and paleontologists do, too. So do some chefs, animal trainers, landscapers and lawyers. It sometimes seems as if anybody who is somebody has a public relations agent. Even the Persian Gulf crisis has a publicist of sorts: Navy Capt. Michael Sherman, known by some Southern California news reporters as "Hollywood Mike" for his past film work in the United States.

Since leaving Ziff Davis as president in 1997, Briggs has provided senior level counsel to Red Herring Communications and Net Gravity. * Peter K. Rundle has been elected a partner in the Irvine office of Arter & Hadden LLP. Rundle, who joined the law firm in 1995, is a member of the litigation and trial practice.

The Protos Awards, Orange County's annual recognition program for public relations work, drew 173 entries this year, up from 136 last year. The winners were announced at a banquet Friday sponsored by the Orange County chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. In all, 31 top honors, or Protos Awards, were bestowed in 25 categories. An additional 50 entries received honorable mention recognition. Entries were judged on creativity and by how well they accomplished the client's objectives.

William D. King has been named chairman and chief executive of Aviation Distributors, a Lake Forest airplane parts reseller. Salem Naber, who served as interim chief executive and president since March 1998, is retiring but will remain a director of the company. King has been a consultant for Aviation for six months. He previously was with JWP Inc. as executive vice president and president of the company's electrical and mechanical group.

Catherine W. Eckstein has been named to the newly created position of corporate vice president of worldwide marketing for Ingram Micro Inc. in Santa Ana, and Randall T. Gifford was appointed senior vice president of product management in the U.S. region. Eckstein was most recently a visiting lecturer at UC Irvine and a marketing consultant. She was previously vice president of marketing at Kellogg Co., and spent 10 years at the Clorox Co., leaving as international marketing manager.
