Mike Haluchak, Charger linebackers coach, picked halfheartedly at a pasta dish, then put down his fork. Five weeks of exposure to the La Jolla sun has enriched his tan, but hasn't done much for his digestion. The Chargers have some vexing problems at linebacker--overpopulation, shortage of blue-chip talent and not much time to sift through the cast of prospects and suspects. Haluchak's responsibility is to straighten out the confusion before the Sept. 7 season opener against Miami.

RENTON, Wash. - They are remarkable. They are unstoppable. They can't be beat. Ken Norton Jr. will gather his Seattle Seahawks linebackers before Saturday's playoff game and remind them of this, raising his voice like a corner man in boxing, and for good reason. It's a strategy he knows well, and an homage to his dad. "Boxers need to be extremely confident. If you've got any insecurities, you're going to lose," Norton said this week. "It's the same way in football. You've got to break them down, but then you've got to build them up. You've got to make them feel on game day that they prepared so well they can't possibly lose.

Baylor football Coach Kevin Steele was fired Sunday but agreed to finish the season. Steele, in his fourth season at Baylor, is 9-33 and his teams have won only one Big 12 conference game during his tenure. The Bears are 3-6 this season, including 1-4 in the Big 12. "It is with regret that I announce this move," Athletic Director Tom Stanton said. "Kevin's efforts have made significant improvements in many areas of our football program." Ray Rhodes just wants to coach football, even if it means a demotion. Rhodes, fired two weeks ago as coach of the Green Bay Packers, signed a two-year contract Monday to become defensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins. "The last couple of years, I've wanted to get more of a hands-on approach," Rhodes said. "I wanted to get back into coaching the defensive side of the football." The Packers were 8-8 in Rhodes' only season and missed the playoffs.

Jeremy Shockey's swollen left ankle has improved considerably, and there is a good chance the Pro Bowl tight end will play for the New York Giants on Sunday in the NFC wild-card game against the Philadelphia Eagles. "I want to play every Sunday," Shockey said Wednesday. "I felt bad I couldn't play last week. It's the nature of this sport, being hurt. You have to deal with the injuries. It's the one thing I don't deal with very well.

This is a shakeup, Raider-style. . . . Two assistant coaches were fired Wednesday and two who reportedly had been let go are still on the staff. Gone, said Coach Mike Shanahan, are defensive coordinator Charlie Sumner and secondary coach Willie Brown. Staying on are quarterback coach Tom Walsh and running backs coach Joe Scannella. Both were reportedly fired last week, and Walsh is known to have cleaned out his desk. Both, however, were Al Davis retainees from Tom Flores' staff.

Jordan Zumwalt says playing linebacker for UCLA is a lot of fun. He just has an unusual definition of what fun is. Fun, he said, is "making the guy across from you feel like he doesn't want to be hit anymore. It's making the other guy feel inferior. Whenever you stop a team, that's fun. Whenever you hear the crowd cheer for you, that's fun. Whenever you look around and see nothing but bodies, that's fun. " Zumwalt is part of a four-man unit that goes, from right to left, Anthony Barr, Eric Kendricks, Zumwalt and Myles Jack.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday upheld the original suspensions he slapped on New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton, General Manager Mickey Loomis and linebackers coach Joe Vitt for their roles in the team's three-season-long bounty program. Payton is banned for the season, Loomis will miss half the season and Vitt is suspended for six games. The commissioner has yet to impose penalties on the 22 to 27 players who reportedly participated in former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' bounty operation, which offered cash to players who hurt opponents or knocked them from games.

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton -- making his first public comments since the NFL announced his one-year suspension for the bounty scandal -- said Tuesday he is disappointed with himself, is mulling an appeal of the penalty, and has been speaking with Bill Parcells but not necessarily to convince him to coach the team this season. "I've really called him more as more of a mentor, someone to shoot some ideas off of him," said Payton, who spoke to a gathering of about 25 reporters who waited for him in the lobby of the Breakers Hotel, where the league is staging its annual meetings.
