A few minutes into the musical "The Drowsy Chaperone," the character known as Man in Chair confides to the audience, "I didn't pay $100 to have the fourth wall come crashing down around my ears." From that point on, that's exactly what happens. In fact, up and down Broadway, actors are breaking out in seemingly uncontrollable fits of self-awareness, addressing the audience directly or acknowledging their own artifice in what is known as "breaking the fourth wall."

NEW YORK - "Fun Home," the musical adaptation of Alison Bechdel's extraordinary graphic memoir, gets off to a choppy start, takes unnecessary musical detours and is staged in a rough-hewn style that sometimes seems more accidental than intentional. But the show, which is having its world premiere here at the Public Theater, succeeds not despite these flaws but in large measure because of them. Bechdel's ironically self-aware and inwardly searching sensibility is honored by a musical that isn't afraid to reveal its awkward side.

The annual Sundance Theatre Lab at Robert Redford 's Sundance resort in Utah means hard work in a relaxed setting for playwrights who get three weeks to tinker with nascent scripts they're hoping to perfect, and a mountainside working vacation amid babbling brooks for an acting corps recruited to help the writers see how well their scenes play. Several acting luminaries are attached to this year's Lab, which began Monday and runs through July 29.  The 27-member ensemble includes  Cherry Jones , who won lead actress Tony awards for “The Heiress” (1995)

Elections. Breakups. Thanksgivings from hell. Lisa Kron's new play, "The Wake," follows a woman on the edge of a nervous breakdown: Type-A journalist Ellen, whose certainty about politics and love gets blown out of the water. Opening this month at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, "The Wake" promises to generate plenty of conversation -- no matter whom you voted for in the last election. Kron's comedy of deprecation and provocative social critique is part Sedaris, part Kushner, yet utterly her own. Her Obie-winning solo show, "2.5 Minute Ride," examined Holocaust survivor guilt by way of roller coasters.

'SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK' SUPERHERO ON BROADWAY He's supposed to be pretty much death-proof. But when it comes to his Broadway musical debut, Spider-Man has looked far more mortal than the web-slinger has been in comic books and movies. Now the new year will prove if an emergency transfusion of a new producer and fresh funding can save Peter Parker's show. "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" doesn't lack for creative talent, with Julie Taymor ("The Lion King") directing a musical written by U2's Bono and the Edge.

Lisa Kron describes three family get-togethers in her "2.5 Minute Ride," a powerfully crafted monologue presented over the weekend at UCLA's Freud Playhouse. Two of the reunions are primarily with her mother's family. Each year they take a car caravan from their Michigan homes to Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio--where, despite heat, old age and infirmity, members of the group ride daredevil roller coasters and eat hamburgers at 10 a.m.

There was, for instance, the time she was working as an office temporary and couldn't stop herself from plunking down $200 of the office's petty cash for makeup at Macy's. Or the time she was parading around at work, unaware that her skirt was caught in her tights. Mistress of the couldn't you just die?

There's a lot to find startling in Lisa Kron's new play, "The Wake," set mostly in a claustrophobic Manhattan apartment during the George W. Bush administration. Close friends grapple with issues of global politics, liberal guilt, race, class and privilege. The lead character, Ellen (Heidi Schreck), torn between two lovers — one male, one female — steams up the Kirk Douglas Theatre stage in frank love scenes with her lesbian partner.
