Although the event that MAC Cosmetics and Vogue magazine organized for Prabal Gurung at the Chateau Marmont on Monday night was billed as an "intimate cocktail party and dinner," it felt more like a patio-overflowing Hollywood awards show/CFDA master class mash-up. Spotted among the attendees were several  "Star Trek Into Darkness"  cast members beamed down ahead of Tuesday's premiere -- Zachary Quinto, Alice Eve and Zoe Saldana -- with Uhura taking the place of honor to Gurung's right at dinner.

A little over two years ago, she was part of Mike Garrett's senior management team, helping guide the fate of USC athletics. Now, Lisa Love is in the big office here, the one with the sixth-floor view of Sun Devil Stadium and north to suburban Phoenix, with its buttes and camelbacks and thousands of newcomers every month. She is the queen of an empire that, until now, has always been run by kings.

Rob Evans won't return for a ninth season as Arizona State's coach. The school made the announcement Friday, a few hours after Evans, 59, had an hour-long meeting with Athletic Director Lisa Love. Love didn't say whether Evans had been fired or quit. She said the university would pay Evans for the final year of his contract. Evans had a record of 119-120.

NCAA President Myles Brand, who spoke at the Pasadena Quarterbacks Club luncheon Friday at Brookside Golf Club, said the No. 1 question he hears the most is: Why isn't there a football playoff? "The simple answer is, the 117 presidents at Division I-A schools like the bowl games," Brand said. "And they're leaving a lot of money on the table."

The USC women's volleyball team is full of surprises. For the second time in two weeks, the eighth-ranked Trojans upset the nation's top-ranked team as USC defeated Long Beach State on Wednesday, 15-11, 15-9, 12-15, 4-15, 15-9, before 1,449 at Long Beach. On Sept. 17, USC upset then-No. 1 Stanford, which fell to No. 4 after the loss. But USC also lost to unranked Oregon State last Friday at Corvallis. The Trojans' inconsistency confuses even the players.
