Knock out 23 opponents and roll through the Bay League with a 13-1 record and someone is bound to take notice. And, to be sure, the Hawthorne High softball team has received rave reviews during the 1989 season. The Cougars, riding a 10-game winning streak heading into next week's CIF-Southern Section playoffs, are ranked ninth in the 4-A polls and this week secured the Bay League crown with victories over Leuzinger and Inglewood. Power hitting, team speed, tight defense and experience have all contributed to the success of the team, but it is the one-two combination of pitchers Tricia Waayers and Lisa Smith that has floored opponents all season.

Whatever happened to a full season of TV shows without reruns, especially in regard to "Moonlighting"? I'm tired of tuning in faithfully every week only to find an occasional new episode. Seems like "Moonlighting" has taken its viewers for granted. The best episode this season featured a story with Ms. DiPesto and Herbert Viola. Lisa Smith, Valinda

The Lisa Olson story just won't go away, will it? The ugly anecdote related by Victor Kiam earlier this week was extremely offensive. Equally offensive is that the so-called "joke" has been re-told on every sportscast I've seen on television. Your own sports section printed it, in its entirety, in both the Wednesday edition when the story broke and again in the Thursday edition reporting Victor Kiam's apology. Does comprehensive journalism require being so specific, or is it another example of the "good ol' boy" network saying, "the joke is on you, Lisa."
