Fresh from mowing down nine opponents last week in a prestigious Florida softball competition, Chapman was ranked No. 1 in the nation Wednesday in the season's first NCAA Division II poll. The Panthers (23-2), who had all five first-place votes, received 100 points, placing them nine points ahead of three-time defending Division II champion Cal State Bakersfield (7-3). "I didn't really think we could get ahead of Bakersfield in the first poll," Chapman Coach Lisle Lloyd said.

It's no coincidence the Southern California College men's basketball team surges when point guard Adam Dzierzynski is playing his best. Dzierzynski has been a catalyst since he was the 1993 Sea View League player of the year at Santa Margarita. He started two years at Chapman, took a season off and is now terrorizing the Golden State Athletic Conference.

It might be hard for opponents of the Chapman softball team to believe, but Susan Caton is just getting back into this softball thing. Caton, the Panthers' leadoff hitter, is batting .446, with an on-base percentage of better than .550, and she has scored 29 runs and driven in 12. And she plays a mean center field. A few months ago, however, Caton wasn't even on the team. She tried out almost on a whim.

Olivas, who plays third base, was among the few who were surprised that she was a first-team All-American selection.
