Copenhagen will stage a musical based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" next year, with 650 amateurs dancing and singing in a huge floating theater. The musical, Denmark's biggest theatrical event ever, will mark the 200th anniversary of the fairy-tale writer's birth. Denmark will celebrate Andersen, who died in 1875, with hundreds of events, parties and festivals.

Midway through The Disney Studio's "The Little Mermaid," (citywide), there's a calypso number called "Under the Sea," led by a hyper-sensitive crab named Sebastian, with his "hot crustacean band." It's a no-place-like-home number, with Sebastian trying to persuade the title character, tawny-tressed Ariel, not to think that "the seaweed's greener . . .

You won't have to wait until the next decade to see Disney's smash-hit animated feature, "The Little Mermaid," on videocassette. Its home-video debut will be considerably sooner--May 18. Like the other Disney animated features, it will be available at a price geared to sales: $26.99. The price will be slashed three dollars with a rebate from Disney. Discount stores, though, will probably sell it for $15 to $18.

Tuna tort. Sorry Van Camp, I just don't see it your way. You're a San Diego company, and my instinct is to back you in all battles with outsiders. I've reviewed the documents in your lawsuit filed last week in federal court in San Diego: Van Camp Seafood Co. vs. Starkist Seafood Co. of Long Beach. You say Premia, the new mermaid advertising symbol for Starkist, is a rip-off of your longtime unnamed mermaid advertising symbol.

Little Mermaid, meet Han, a polished steel hunk who also perches on a rock overlooking a famous Danish harbor. And he blinks (or is he winking at you?) once an hour. The two sculptures are cities apart -- the Little Mermaid overlooks Copenhagen while Han gazes out from Helsingoer about 28 miles to the north -- but share a common size and look. And that's likely the point: Han, which means "him" in Danish, hopes to draw as many tourists to his town, a.k.a. Elsinore, thanks to Shakespeare, as the century-old Little Mermaid does to hers.

Little Mermaid Smoke House is recalling its Smoked Herring and Pickled Herring because the viscera of the fish were not removed and the products now pose a risk of contamination by Clostridium botulinum , according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Botulism bacteria can cause life-threatening illness and consumers are warned not to eat the products even if they don't look or smell spoiled. The recalled products are manufactured by Little Mermaid Smoke House and were distributed in California.

For many parents of young children, the battle over limiting little ones' time with iPads and other mobile devices is difficult and seemingly unending. They can serve as fantastic baby sitters in a pinch, but the soulless gaze they can prompt in children can be downright terrifying. A number of scientific studies have raised red flags; this summer Public Health England, for instance, warned that children who spend more time watching screens tend to have higher levels of emotional distress, anxiety and depression.

What a fabulous virtuosic display of color and animation "The Little Mermaid" is! What a terrific musical score! And how very sorely disappointing it is! Using a Hans Christian Andersen story is a delicate matter because of the gruesome nature of many of his plots. But I was confident Disney could create a truly great children's film out of his story. What I saw was a movie inappropriate for children and repulsive to conscientious adults.

John Neumeier doesn't know "who started the rumor" that all children should avoid seeing his ballet "The Little Mermaid. " But he suspects that the culprits might be big fans of the exuberant 1989 animated Disney film that made the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale synonymous with spunky, red-haired Ariel and the crab Sebastian singing "Under the Sea. " "My ballet doesn't have the sweet aftertaste of the Disney film, and there are moments of...

Following weak box office performances for re-releases of "Monsters, Inc.," "Finding Nemo" and "Beauty and the Beast" in 3-D, Walt Disney Studios has canceled plans for a 3-D "The Little Mermaid" in September. The underwater animated hit from 1989 was the fourth and final 3-D re-release for which Disney announced plans in late 2011 after "The Lion King" proved a surprise hit in the format, grossing nearly $100 million in the U.S. and Canada. But "The Lion King" turned out to be an anomaly, as the three follow-ups grossed far less.
