To Americans, "loaf-shaped" connotes something rectangular with definite square corners. That wouldn't occur to people in most of Europe, where nearly all breads are baked free-standing--the long French and Italian loaves, the round rustic breads found from Russia to Spain, fancy braided harvest loaves and so on. Only in the Netherlands and the English-speaking world is bread usually baked in rectangular loaf pans. England and Holland changed to the loaf pan because it was more convenient for bakers and in order to get a higher loaf (because the dough can't spread sideways as it bakes, loaf-pan bread rises higher)

I got back from Seattle dead tired from the flight. I know, I know, it's just 2½ hours, but I was seated in front of a family traveling with at least four screaming kids. (And I was unlucky enough to have been on the same flight with them going out as well!) I was starving. I set down my bags and pulled out the loaf of bread I'd bought at Sitka & Spruce , which my friend Roberta claimed was the best in the city. Must be, because the four of us devoured an entire loaf before dinner at her house.

Reporting from Washington — Why, yes, the Lakers' season could get worse than a shoddy showing in Detroit. The Lakers fumbled away a 21-point lead to the sorrowful Washington Wizards in a 106-101 loss Wednesday, and that was only the beginning. Andrew Bynum admitted to "loafing around" on the court. Coach Mike Brown critiqued Kobe Bryant's shot selection. Bryant didn't seem overly thrilled by that. Welcome to the Lakers' 2011-12 season. A victory against Miami on Sunday was supposed to be a turning point, but the Lakers turned two thumbs down with lame losses to two downtrodden teams.

Bret McKenzie is the music supervisor and primary songwriter for "The Muppets," and his biggest competition for award consideration may just be himself. He has at least three compositions from the film being touted by those who track such things: gleeful production number "Life's a Happy Song," disco anthem "Me Party" and existential '80s-ish power ballad "Man or Muppet. " Sporting a comfy-looking green hoodie and unruly hair and beard — exacerbated by early-morning dad duties — the affable "Flight of the Conchords" musical comic discussed marrying his adult and meta sensibility with the Muppets via video chat from his home in New Zealand.

Unless you're reading this story in your grandmother's Brooklyn or Minnesota kitchen, a loaf of dark bread just out of the oven, you may be part of the vast majority of people for whom dense rye breads are a bit out of the comfort zone. You may run across old-world loaves like these, on your table if you're lucky or maybe at a Vermont bakery, the loaves stacked in a dark mosaic, but in this country it's mostly the more familiar baguettes and country whites that we buy and bake at home.

One thing I learned this weekend in my effort to eat right was that I needed the right foods in my house -- including bread -- so on Day 2 of my eat-right campaign, I went to the grocery store. My cart had never seen so many vegetables, grains and water -- or such a profound lack of chocolate, sugar and fruit. It was pretty easy getting the romaine lettuce, reduced-fat Wheat Thins and Diet Dr. Pepper, but I learned a little something about bread that I never knew before. Usually, I would buy whatever bread was on sale.
