Tricor Mortgage Lending, one of Southern California's fastest-growing loan providers, is expected to announce plans today to reshape itself into an Internet-based lender, changing its name to LoansDirect.com and unveiling a new Web site that promises to close home loans in as little as five days.

E-Trade Group Inc., moving to diversify in order to weather the shaky stock market, said Thursday it will buy LoansDirect.com, a closely held online mortgage broker. Although specific terms weren't disclosed, E-Trade said the transaction will involve an exchange of stock. Huntington Beach-based LoansDirect, a major provider of online mortgages, will become part of E-Trade's bank subsidiary.

The founder and TV pitchman for mortgage lending leader Ditech.com in Costa Mesa abruptly resigned Monday after three of his top managers were indicted for allegedly trying to extort kickbacks from a Pittsburgh real estate services firm. J. Paul Reddam, 44, a former philosophy teacher who stars in Ditech.com's ubiquitous television commercials, has not been charged with any wrongdoing. A spokesman for the company, a unit of General Motors Corp.

The Huntington Beach-based lender, which put itself up for sale last spring, hopes the new Internet focus will allow it to capitalize on Wall Street's growing interest in online mortgage providers.

When Anthony Hsieh isn't running his Irvine-based online mortgage company, he regularly skippers a 60-foot yacht, plying the seas in search of quarter-ton marlin and other outsize billfish. But this month, it was Hsieh who was hooked. The 39-year-old is selling his Home LoanCenter.com to LendingTree, a unit of IAC/InterActiveCorp that matches borrowers and lenders. Terms of the deal, expected to close by year's end, were not disclosed.
