Bruce Parkhill, who revitalized the Penn State basketball team when it joined the Big Ten Conference, resigned unexpectedly as coach Wednesday, saying he was burned out. Parkhill, who guided the Nittany Lions to a 21-11 record last season and a third-place finish in the National Invitation Tournament, was replaced by long-time assistant Jerry Dunn. Parkhill will remain at the school as assistant athletic director. "I just haven't enjoyed coaching as much as I used to--it's that simple," he said.

Her face bruised and swollen, tears streaming down her cheeks, U.S. wrestler Sara McMann stood on the awards podium Monday and registered little joy for the historic silver medal she had just won. "I don't think there is anything more painful in world," she said of finishing second. "I did everything I could. I worked as hard as I could and it just wasn't enough." McMann and Japan's Kaori Icho fought a close match in the 139-pound weight class that went to Icho, 3-2.

Casey Mears will move to Hendrick Motorsports next year to join other NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers in the Hendrick stable such as Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch, the team announced Wednesday. Mears, a 28-year-old member of the famed Mears racing family of Bakersfield, had said last week that he would not return to the Dodge team of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates after his contract expires this year. His move to Hendrick was not unexpected.

Only a few hundred fans are in the stands as the left guard fires off the line of scrimmage and pulls with controlled aggression to his right. The defense reacts much too slowly as he wipes out a defensive end and linebacker with a well-rehearsed block. As the lineman strides confidently back to the huddle, a fan leans on a rusty fence and says to his buddy, "Man, did you see that? That guy could play in the NFL. He should be playing for the Steelers!"
