Architect David Marks dreamed he was flying over London and brought the idea to breakfast with him: "Let's build a huge Ferris wheel for the millennium," he proposed. Julia Barton thought about it. "Why not put it on the Thames?" his wife and design partner suggested. Three years later, their plan for a 500-foot-in-diameter Millennium Wheel diagonally across from the Houses of Parliament is a popular symbol of the new century for a metropolis of 7 million where--suddenly--the future is now.
