Blane Schvaneveldt, a hall of fame quarter horse trainer who dominated Los Alamitos Race Course for decades, racking up nearly 4,000 victories at the Orange County track, has died. He was 76. Schvaneveldt died Monday at Los Alamitos Medical Center, the track announced. He had been hospitalized Friday morning with heart arrhythmia. Inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2001, Schvaneveldt had won 3,982 races and 38 training titles at Los Alamitos since 1968.

What a difference a summer makes. At this time last year, Santa Ana Mater Dei was scrambling to find a replacement at quarterback for Matt Barkley , the Gatorade national player of the year. Now the Monarchs have a quarterback in Max Wittek , who looked better than Barkley at times Saturday in helping Mater Dei win the championship of the Dana Point Dana Hills seven-on-seven passing tournament. Yes, the 6-foot-4 Wittek is that good, which is why he's going to follow Barkley to USC in 2011.

One after another, Los Alamitos players stood in the batter's box Friday, took a couple of swings, then walked back into the dugout after suffering the same fate — a strikeout at the hands of Huntington Beach Edison junior left-hander Henry Owens. Nine times in the first three innings, Los Alamitos batters struck out. This is what life is going to be like in the Sunset League this season when Owens is on the mound. The Griffins became more competitive as the game progressed, getting four singles and putting runners on second base twice, but they still were shut out by Owens, 2-0. With the regular season ending Friday, it's time to recognize players and teams exceeding expectations in boys' basketball this season. The players: Wesley Saunders, L.A. Windward. Averaging 23.5 points, the 6-foot-5 junior has established himself as one of the top college prospects for 2011.
