It is a remarkable work, quite likely the best documentary on the City of Angels ever made, but it's never had an extended run in Los Angeles -- until now. It's played successfully in festivals worldwide, from Auckland to Thessaloniki, but unless you see one of its nine American Cinematheque screenings over the next six days, who knows when or if ever you'll get another chance. If you love film and Los Angeles in equal measure, that would be a terrible shame.

Los Angeles Unified School District Supt. Ruben Zacarias was honored as a "Children's Champion" at Etta Israel Center's fourth annual fund-raiser at Chasen's restaurant on Jan. 17. The event, attended by 550 guests, raised $200,000 for the Los Angeles center's programs and professional services for children with special needs. * Has your group held a recent charity fund-raiser? Dr. Esther Somerfeld-Ziskind, a pioneering neurologist and psychiatrist whose seven-decade career spanned much of the history of those specialties in Los Angeles, has died. She was 101. Somerfeld-Ziskind was seeing patients and attending weekly learning sessions at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, where she was the oldest former resident, until shortly before her death Nov. 13 from natural causes. She died at her home in Silver Lake, said her daughter, Emile Jacobson of Los Angeles.

The award of a contract worth $750 million to build bus shelters and street kiosks has been delayed after allegations that the firm favored by the city failed to disclose past involvement in bidding irregularities in Europe. Infinity Decaux LLC was recommended by the Los Angeles Public Works Department, but the matter was placed on hold after a competitor complained that the bidder failed to disclose, as required, past violations.
