Sophia Waugh of Agua Dulce, a past member of the Antelope Valley Union High School District board of trustees, was sworn in Tuesday as the newest member of the Los Angeles County Board of Education. Waugh, selected by Supervisor Mike Antonovich to serve on the seven-member board, was named to a two-year term. She replaces Barbara Pieper, a member of the county Office of Education board since 1990.

The Los Angeles County Board of Education shut down two charter campuses Friday, leaving 420 students scrambling to find new schools. For nearly 100 students at the Progressive Education Entrepreneurial Charter Schools in Inglewood and South Los Angeles, it is the second time in three months they have had to find a new campus. "Here we go again," said parent Angie Garcia, who sighed as she watched several students and parents cry in the main office Friday morning.

A vote to push aside a key group that oversees school district breakups and boundary changes was postponed Monday after some critics said that a top advisor to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was trying to secure greater influence for his boss. A proposal to transfer power from a Los Angeles County panel on school district organization to the county Board of Education was to have been presented today by its author, county school board President Thomas Saenz.
