The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will file a lawsuit Tuesday against a group of insurance companies for refusing to help pay to fix the earthquake-damaged San Fernando Courthouse. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who represents the district that includes the courthouse, said the county gave the insurance companies until last Friday to cooperate and they did not.

One recent evening, Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich was being roasted at a $500-a-plate dinner, attended by 800 supporters--all eager to shake his hand and aid his reelection campaign. Across the county in a modest home in Palmdale, Don Kumaus, Antonovich's only opponent for the 5th District supervisorial seat, was having a quiet dinner with his family. They talked about work and school, and then went to bed early.

County supervisors in Los Angeles and San Diego took opposite sides Tuesday in the long-running fight over the plan to store low-level radioactive waste at Ward Valley in the Mojave Desert. After hearing pointed arguments, Los Angeles County supervisors voted 3 to 2 to go on record against the proposed dump site because of the lack of assurances that the site "will not contaminate the county's critical water supply" from the Colorado River.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors said Tuesday that it will launch a nationwide search for a new chief administrative officer to replace Sally Reed, amid disclosures that the two front-runners from within county government don't want the job. The supervisors also decided in a closed session to appoint Reed's chief assistant, Sandra Davis, to be interim chief administrative officer when Reed leaves June 1.
