Two men were in custody Friday as the suspected gunmen who shot an unarmed, off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy execution-style during a robbery of a hair salon in Buena Park. The deputy, 26-year-old Shayne York of Valencia, remained in critical condition late Friday with major brain damage. His family was grappling with the decision whether to disconnect a breathing apparatus that was keeping him alive, authorities said.

An Ontario man was being held on suspicion of kidnapping Saturday after he allegedly snatched a 9-year-old girl off a La Mirada street, blindfolded her and took her on a harrowing 30-minute drive that ended in Orange County, authorities said. William Thomas, 45, was taken into custody late Friday after leading La Habra police and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies on a chase through north Orange County.

Calling him a "dishonest and evil" man, U.S. District Judge Laughlin E. Waters sentenced Macario M. Duran, a former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, to more than 16 years in prison this week in a continuing drug money skimming scandal. The sentence for Duran, 47, of Northridge, was the longest yet given to any of the 25 former sheriff's deputies or deputies' family members convicted in the matter.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant and Antelope Valley school board member was arrested Friday after a 14-year-old girl accused him of molesting her, authorities said. Sgt. Kevin Wright Carney, 48, of Palmdale, was arrested by deputies and booked at the sheriff's station in Lancaster, authorities said.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was arrested Tuesday in connection with the alleged kidnaping and rape of a 20-year-old woman. Ramon Avalos, 28, was suspended but will continue to receive pay because no formal charges have been filed, according to sheriff's spokesman Bob Stoneman. The woman told investigators she was stopped "on a public street by a uniformed deputy sheriff, under the guise of an enforcement stop," said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman John Dunkin.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy showing off his quick draw from a new holster shot himself in the right thigh in a waiting room at Eastlake Juvenile Court, authorities said. Deputy Christopher Haymond, 27, who has been with the department for four years, was in good condition at County-USC Medical Center. A former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty Monday to federal theft and money-laundering charges, admitting that he helped steal about $800,000 during a 1988 drug raid. Stephen Nichols, 41, of La Habra Heights also pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to violating the civil rights of a drug trafficker caught in the drug raid when he lied to a judge about the circumstances of the case.

Municipal Judge David Horowitz bound Darryl Erwin Byrd, who remains in custody in lieu of $375,000 bail, over for trial in Los Angeles Superior Court on two felony counts of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

A woman raped by an on-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy has received a $150,000 settlement check from the county. Kelly Salazar, now 24, was one of three women assaulted in 1990 and 1991 by then-Deputy Lloyd Shoemaker following routine traffic stops.
