A wind-whipped fire scorched up to five acres of brush in a remote area in the hills above Chatsworth Wednesday night, but caused no injuries and did not threaten homes, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The fire broke out just before 6 p.m. and burned south of the 118 Freeway near Santa Susana Pass and the Ventura County line. It was contained by 8 p.m.

Three San Fernando children and one adult were wounded by shotgun fire in a drive-by shooting Wednesday night in San Fernando, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. The shootings occurred in the 1500 block of Coronel Street near Lazard Street at 8:30 p.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Pat Marek. A 9-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy were taken by helicopter to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles, said Nursing Supervisor Kathy Stevenson. They were both in good condition, she said.

An 18-month-old girl was critically injured Friday afternoon when she fell from a third-floor balcony at an apartment complex, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said. The child was listed in critical condition Friday night at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, said hospital spokesman Steve Rutledge. The girl, whose name was withheld, was breathing with the help of a respirator and undergoing tests for a possible skull fracture, he said.

Three sites were proposed as possible locations for additional fire stations in the northeast Valley during a City Council meeting Friday. The proposed sites, identified by the Los Angeles Fire Department, would be added to the area currently covered by Fire Station 81, which was built in 1951, said Brian Humphrey, spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Fire officials have said Station 81 has one of the city's heaviest workloads, which can cause delays in response times.

A 70-year-old man died after he was struck by a vehicle Friday evening, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said. The victim was in a marked crosswalk in the 5200 block of Kester Avenue at about 5:45 p.m., said Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells. The name of the victim and information about the driver were not immediately available, authorities said.

Los Angeles firefighters knocked down a 3-acre vegetation fire Sunday in a rugged part of Griffith Park near the Griffith Observatory, authorities said. The blaze, reported to authorities about 3 p.m., was put out in less than 90 minutes, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Brush and grass were consumed by the flames, but no structures were threatened and no injuries were reported, Humphrey said.

A fire early Sunday caused about $180,000 in damage to a single-story Tarzana house, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said. About 40 firefighters were sent to the blaze at 4804 N. Queen Florence Lane, which occurred shortly before 4 a.m. It took just over an hour to extinguish the flames. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the spokesman said.

City firefighters discovered a man's body early Saturday morning after extinguishing a Montecito Heights fire. The outdoor blaze was reported shortly before 3 a.m. in the 3100 block of Amethyst Street northeast of downtown, said Brian Humphrey, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, then found the victim, who was taken to the coroner's office for an autopsy. It appears the man started a fire to keep warm, Humphrey said. -- Jason Song
