A prominent physician in the Japanese American community in Los Angeles was found bludgeoned to death Friday in the bedroom of her Westlake home, police said. Linda Morimoto, 75, had been killed less than 24 hours before her body was found at her home in the 400 block of South Lafayette Park Place, officials said. Detectives said Friday night that they had not determined a motive. Anyone with information is asked to call the Los Angeles Police Rampart Division homicide unit at (213) 207-7073.

A man shot in a neighborhood near Echo Park died later at Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, police said Wednesday. The victim was identified as Chong Tea, 36, said coroner's spokesman Bob Dambacher. The shooting occurred late Tuesday night on a sidewalk in the 1100 block of Laveta Terrace, said Detective Bob Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division.

A 30-year-old man was found shot to death in a car Thursday in a Los Angeles alley, police said. The shooting occurred about 8:20 a.m. in the 1800 block of South Bonnie Brae Street, said Det. Kenneth Wiseman of the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division. The unidentified man died at the scene, Wiseman said. A motive for the attack was not known and the shooting remained under investigation.

A drive-by shooting on South Mariposa Avenue left a 22-year-old man dead early Friday morning in what appeared to be a drug-related attack, police said. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division responded to the scene at 4:50 a.m. and found the man lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene, said LAPD Officer Don Cox. The victim's name was not released and authorities had not found a weapon or identified suspects.

An 3-year-old girl was found unharmed and reunited with her mother Friday morning in the Rampart area just west of downtown, a day after allegedly being kidnapped by her father, police said. The girl's father was arrested a short time later for investigation of child stealing after two of his friends led police to him. Rigoberto Castro, 28, allegedly grabbed his daughter, Heidi, from Ada Funes as the couple were walking along Olympic Boulevard, police said.

One thousand pounds of live trout are scheduled to be dumped into the Echo Park lake for the third annual Becky Thatcher / Tom Sawyer Fishing Derby and Easter Egg Contest this weekend. The event, sponsored by Concerned Citizens of Echo Park, Friends of Echo Park Lake, the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division and local merchants, is scheduled for Saturday at Echo Park and is free and open to the public.

If the Grinch tries to steal Christmas this year, the cops at the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division station will be ready. And thanks to the work of some community volunteers, Rampart will dispense a little more good cheer than the average police station. Officer Webster Wong and a crew of 11 volunteers have decorated the station with more than 25,000 Christmas lights, tinsel and a Christmas tree donated by the students at Rosemont Elementary School.

Three girls, ages 12 and 13, reportedly stole a car Thursday night in Los Angeles, hit the leg of its owner, led police on a chase and caused a six-vehicle crash, police said. It began at 6:30 p.m. when a man saw the girls drive off in his Honda near West 2nd Street and Bimini Place. He tried to stop them by running in front of the car, but it struck him in the leg, causing minor injuries, said Sgt. John Vach of the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division.

Re "Murder Trial Tests Little-Used Doctrine," Jan. 31: In 1997 in Solano County, during a fight a white youth kills a Latino youth by stabbing him in the back and serves two days in Juvenile Hall and probation on a weapons charge. Two Latino youths, who tried to save the life of their friend, are charged with second-degree murder and face 15 years to life if convicted. The fight started after a group of six white youths exchanged insults and attacked a car driven by the three Latino youths.
