This is where the Times' [witty and creative] staff inserts words or comments intended to explain athletes' quotes. NOW WE KNOW what it takes to bring the city of Boston to its knees: a bunch of Lite-Brites, some batteries and a couple of weeks for the citizenry to notice them. Emergency personnel and anti-terrorism squads shut down more than a dozen highways, transit stations and other locations across the city Wednesday after receiving reports about multiple suspicious devices.

Newsday and Nynex to Develop Home Shopping Service: Nynex Corp. and Newsday, a Long Island, N.Y., newspaper published by Times Mirror Co., said they will form a joint venture that will allow consumers to search Nynex business directory listings and Newsday advertising listings over the phone. Consumers will be able to find the products and services best suited to their needs based on location, cost, hours of service and other criteria, the companies said.

The Times was one of three newspapers to win a triple crown award in the large paper circulation category in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors national contest. Results of section and writing contests were announced Wednesday. The Times, along with the Boston Globe and New York Daily News, finished in the top 10 in daily, Sunday and special section categories--APSE's triple crown--in judging by 90 sports editors and their assistants over the last three days in Redondo Beach.

"People are always talking about how the literary world is a New York-East Coast Establishment. One of the things we were proud to affirm by having Jack be our president is that is not the case," said Thomas M. Disch, vice president and secretary of the organization.

The program was offered to 5,200 full-time employees with at least one year of service. Eligibility was based on seniority, and limits were placed on the number of employees from each department who could participate.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Boston Globe, Dallas Morning News, Newsday and Miami Herald were other major-circulation newspapers that placed in both categories. The Orange County Register was named in the top 10 daily and received honorable mention on Sunday.
